Let me say right off the bat that I hate cats!!! But I don’t care what a cat eats or tries to eat that does not give me or you the right to shoot it. I see the “killing songbirds” as an excuse to support one’s view. To me it’s selfish for someone to shoot a cat, or dog in many cases, when they come into the woods we are hunting. Ask yourself this…..would you shoot your own dog because he’s running deer? It’s called animal instinct for them to do what they do. I personaly know guys who will shoot dogs if they see them in the woods and have had these discussions. How do you/they know that this animal did not escape and the owner doesn’t even know it’s gone? I think all you guys get where I’m going with this, so no need to beat the horse too much. Oh yeah did I tell you I hate cats!

Too answer your question I have known guys who have shot their own dogs. One guy shot his bird dog who would not follow commands and he was tired of chasing it down when it was time to leave. I also know another guy who shot his dog for chasing his cattle. So in my eyes if your pet is not where it is suppose to be then it is fair game. Keep your animal home and it is fine. Where I use to live the police department was called by me and several others about some dogs running around in town and we were given permission by the chief to kill them anyway we wanted without shooting them. This was in town and from the local police chief who did not want to bother with them. So I think the attitude and tendancy is to get rid of free roaming pets. As an owner you are responsible for keeping your pet in its proper place. I am not talking about shooting pets on the porch or inside of a fenced yard. I am talking about pets roaming the countryside with no one around claiming the pet is theirs. I am not trying to offend anyone nor do I have anything against muskyman. This is my feeling on the subject and I have acquired this attitude from my experiences with free roaming pets. Believe me when I say that I shoot free roaming cats when I am out hunting. Oh yeah and when I trapped I never released any cat that I caught either.

I think the biggest cat problems come from farms and rural homes who let the damn things run free and have 50 of them crawling out of every crevice in the barn, silo, shed, and everywhere else.

If you want this feral cat argument to heat up, take it to the pheasant forum. I seem to remember some study last year on how many young pheasants cats kill.

This is on FOX 9 website today:

    http://www.kmsp.com/news/story.asp?1650279

Pet owners in Chisago County nurse five dogs and two cats back to health.
They either wandered away and were shot, or in some cases, neighbors shot them trying to settle a feud.
So far all of the animals have managed to survive.
    Police are investigating the cases.

At least they changed thier tone and “Deer Hunters” are not the guilty party anymore…..

It was asked “would I shoot my own dog?” If he’s running a deer, and I can’t catch him in the act and beat it out of him, you darned right I’ll shoot my own dog. Once they start and get away with it, it’s pretty hard to stop them thereafter.
For me, it’s just a common sense, do the right thing at the start, dog owner duty.
Note the last 3 words please.

Was wasn’t the woman ticketed for letting the animal run free?!?! If your dog runs loose, and the dog catcher gets him, you can get a ticket. Why not her!?
Have channel 9 worry about that, and leave the Gophers Hockey team alone! Hey Passolt! Do you want me to believe that when you played at St. Cloud State you never had a freaking beer! These guys suck.

    OK, I feel better now.
    Thanks,

I dont know about you guys but in my mind any cats on the farm where I hunt is fare game. We are miles away from any home. Any cats out here are strays, all the strays do out here is kill pheasants and feed the coyotes neither of which I can tollerate.

Funny thing happened to me since this thread appeared…I was bowhunting last weekend and have never seen a cat walk by while on stand. Needless to say, about 8 AM the woods absolutley erupted with squirrels barking or making some awful sound. There were at least 20 squirrels making an awful alarming sound, drove me fricken’ nuts! What do you know directly from that direction comes a sneaky little feline….Sorry to say, it never came within 30 yards and I didnt have a field point to flick. Didnt want to waste a shiny broadhead on the furball. Point is, every squirrel in the woods new exactly what was coming through! I have also fallen victim to the friendly feline but when I see them out and about I realize they are still more predator then pet. This is lady is as quilty as any for taking part in the domestication.
