I hope you guys all learn a lesson from this. If your going to shoot a cat- aim small, miss small and keep shooting until it’s down. Kick some leaves over it if possible. If not just leave the area……..

Now I’ll preface this with I am a cat owner and I love animals, but irresponsible owners I have little time for! With that being said, it’s a house pet.
Oh by the way, I feel the same way about dogs, you let them run wild, and they come on my property and I don’t know them, chances are the guns will be a blazing………..
Case in point, a number of years ago our son was chased through the yard up north by 2 rotweillers that came out of the woods. He just made it into the pick-up…. very, very scared to say the least. 12 gauge in hand I let the lead fly. I must of been feeling soft that day, I shot over the top of them and they ran away. A minute later I heard a truck coming down the road, the guy heard the shots and was looking for his dogs. I gave him a real piece of my mind and he perfectly well knew where I was coming from and he was very sorry it happened.
Some people are just too ignorant to know they are wrong to let there animals run the open country. Now if it’s there own land, that’s a different story!
You’re in the wrong to shoot then!
As far as I’m concerned, you let them run wild, their fair game! Again there pets, take care of them as such!
Slop hit it on the head as well as Jon J.
The hunters not the bad guy here.

theduckPosts: 149November 16, 2005 at 5:56 pm #12079Here is my email to the news station about how I feel about this incident. “I think the whole story and logic behind shooting feral cats needs to be covered. Ask any wildlife conservationist and you will get the reason for shooting wild, loose, free roaming cats. This cat owner is just as responsible for the cat getting shot as the hunter. I think the whole story should be investigated and you as a reporter of news need to research your stories before you go blaming hunters and taking a side. Fair reporting should be done here. Look into free roaming cats and the damage they do to our natural resources. I am not saying that all cats need to be shot but I think the whole situation should be covered in this case. Are there any leash laws in that area? What are the reasons for keeping those laws on the books? Can people just let their animals roam free to do as they please? Who is responsible for the damage the loose animal does? If I kill a game animal out of season I am breaking the law and have to pay a fee to the state for illegally harvesting of game along with a fine. Doesn’t that fall into the same category? Who replaces or pays to replace the animals that the free roaming cat kills? Lots of questions need to be answered here before you cover a story like this. Do you have no ethics in Journalism?”
I am from Iowa and do not even watch their news but this type of thing chaps my sensitive areas. Everyone needs to write them to tell them how we feel as hunters and outdoors men and women. We will get the short end of the stick every time if we don’t.

November 16, 2005 at 6:15 pm #12081by the way we should forward this on to every hunter we know, get them to recant this story or something…..
The more I think about this the more pissed off I get, how do they know someone in the neighborhood wasn’t raising pheasants, ducks, ect and the cat kept coming around and so on and so forth??

November 16, 2005 at 6:58 pm #12085Actually, when I took Wildlife management class in college, we learned cats kill more songbirds in WI than all other predators combined.
Cats are fine in the house if you like them. Cats roaming the woods are a no-no in my book.

November 16, 2005 at 7:26 pm #12094I do have to say that whoever shot the cat was irresposible. What kind of a person shoots anything, and does not do the responsible thing and go to it, check if it is alive, and not take appropriate action. If it was still alive, it should have been put out of its missery. Poor cat now has to live with that old bitty and listen to her complain about deer hunters to everyone she knows for her whole life.
And for the record, who said that it was shot, could it not have been hit by a car and rolled on the asphalt, tore off a large chunk or meat, and looked like a gun shot wound.
Hopefully the cat never leaves the house again for fear of these mean people.

November 16, 2005 at 7:33 pm #12095Maybe she should have dressed the cat in blaze orange Hey I like cats we have a couple and I like dogs to but if the owners dont care enough about them to keep them in their yard or house they might come up missing

November 16, 2005 at 7:34 pm #12096CORRECT ME IF I’M WRONG– DONT DEER HUNTERS USE SLUGS? IF THIS CAT WAS HIT BY A DEER HUNTER HIS A– WOULD BE GONE COMPLETELY NOT PARTIALLY SO SHE JUST BLAMES DEER HUNTERS. I WOULD SAY BIRD SHOT AND THE CAT WAS AFTER HIS GROUSE HE WAS HUNTING. FISHINFOOL

November 16, 2005 at 8:40 pm #12100Farmboy, I am sure the shooter trailed it, but once the blood trail ended on the front porch, I am sure he quit, knowing it made it home safely….sorry I had to

November 16, 2005 at 8:50 pm #11908You guy’s bring up a good point. How badly shot up was the thing? The investigation and story should of been about the Vet who didn’t just talk her into putting the thing down, instead bilking the woman out of who knows how much to save it.
If it was her choice to keep it alive, she got what she deserves. Cats are available everywhere and free, you can’t even give them all away in most instances!

November 16, 2005 at 10:48 pm #12103I moved to MN 8 years ago from WI. I just recently moved back to WI and while bowhunting I have seen a lot of cats in the woods this year. I dont really remember seeing any cat when I bowhunted here before. I didnt see many in SE MN either. I probably have seen a cat probably every third time out hunting. They seem to be wild cat because once the see you they are gone.

Practice, practice, practice thats all i have to say.November 17, 2005 at 12:28 am #12106Let me say right off the bat that I hate cats!!! But I don’t care what a cat eats or tries to eat that does not give me or you the right to shoot it. I see the “killing songbirds” as an excuse to support one’s view. To me it’s selfish for someone to shoot a cat, or dog in many cases, when they come into the woods we are hunting. Ask yourself this…..would you shoot your own dog because he’s running deer? It’s called animal instinct for them to do what they do. I personaly know guys who will shoot dogs if they see them in the woods and have had these discussions. How do you/they know that this animal did not escape and the owner doesn’t even know it’s gone? I think all you guys get where I’m going with this, so no need to beat the horse too much. Oh yeah did I tell you I hate cats!
