maby it would have made more sence to wave him over and invite him into your blind since he was late, then you both would have been able to kill a couple of ducks and maby made a new hunting buddy. but Im just an optimist and dont think everyone in the would “except me” is an unethicle, spot stealing game hog. just my opinion

I don’t know how many guys you have hunting around you down there but even 200 yards seems pretty damn close to me.
If you are going to hunt ducks do everyone a favor and get out and scout out spots. I’m quite sure that even down there there are plenty of good backwater areas that are not getting pounded as much as the well known spots. The shooting will probably be much better too.
My two cents.
IN A DREAM WORLD THAT COULD BE POSSIABLE, IF I WOULD WIN THE LOTTERY AND COULD HUNT EVERYDAY AND NOT HAVE TO WORK THAT WOULD BE GREAT, BUT THAT IS NOT THE CASE,WE HERE IN THE LACROSSE AREA HAVE ALOT OF AREAS TO HUNT BUT IF YOU ENJOY SITTING THERE AND NOT EVEN REACH FOR YOUR GUN FOR THE 3 OR 4 HRS THAT YOU ARE OUT THERE, THAT IS NOT FUN FOR ME OR THE DOG, I CALL THEM MY SHOULD HAVE WENT FISHING DAYS.
THE PROBLEM HERE IS WE HUNT OUT SIDE OF A REFUGE, THE DUCKS ONLY GO TO A COUPLE OF SPOTS WHEN THEY DO COME OUT AND THE GUYS ON THE REFUGE LINE ARE SKY BUSTERS AND SEND THEM UP TO THE UPPER ELEVATIONS,AND THAN THEY GO TO BROWNSVILLE 15 – 20 MI AWAY, GET SKY BLASTED AT THERE AND GO INTO THE REFUGE AT BROWNSVILLE. I WAS LATE SAT. MORNING (LEFT THE LANDING 45min. BEFORE SHOOTING)AND HAVE HUNTED THAT AREA SINCE I WAS TO SMALL TO HUNT (WENT WITH MY FATHER WHEN I WAS 5 AND I AM 46 NOW, THATS 41 yrs OF SCOUTING) THIS AREA HAD 3 TIMES THE NUMBER OF ISLANDS TO HUNT AND LESS NUMBERS OF HUNTERS AND MORE DUCKS, I RELIZE THAT GOING OUT EARLY SHOULD GET YOU THE GOOD SPOTS AND I DO GIVE THOSE GUYS THE DISTANCE THAY DESERVE FOR GETTING THERE EARLY.(SOME HAVE TO GET THERE QUITE A FEW HOURS BEFORE SHOOTING TIME) BUT 200 YDS IS PRETTY FAR FETCHED. THAT WOULD ONLY LEAVE ROOM FOR HALF THE GUYS THAT HUNT THIS AREA.
IN CLOSING 100 YDS SHOULD BE GOOD BECAUSE A 45 YD SHOOT IS TO LONG, SO 45×2=90 YDS + 10 FOR GOOD MEASURE = 100 YDS.
IN THIS BEE HIVE OF A HUNTING AREA ON THE WEEKENDS.BY THE WAY I TAKE MONDAY AFTERNOONS OFF TO HUNT WITH MY 77YR OLD FATHER AND OUR OLDER FRIENDS, YESTERDAY WE ONLY HAD 4 CARS AT THE LANDING AND COULD PICK FROM QUITE A FEW GOOD SPOTS, SHOT A COUPLE OF DUCKS SAW SOME BIG WAVES OF DUCKS AND HAD A GOOD TIME.
THE WEEKENDS AROUND HERE ARE A TOTALLY DIFF. STORY.

November 8, 2005 at 11:16 pm #11620Thanks Garvi, you clarified most of my point I was trying to make. 100 yds would be fine if there weren’t so many guys shooting at them at 50 yds (out OR up). I usually dont mind the guys that are 100-150 yds away that are respectful and don;t shoot at the ducks working my dekes as I don;t shoot at the ones working theirs.
I hunted between brownsville and Stoddard all thru highschool (Desoto 82 grad) I remember when you had to use crosby or bullet chute to get out near the canes. Now you can shoot straight across. no stumps or anything left. Yes, half the cover and 3 times the hunters coupled with the sky busters on the firing line south of Goose your talking about makes it even tougher to begin with.

November 8, 2005 at 11:35 pm #11622Thanks to this post. I remember why I gave up hunting quackers. It just wasn’t worth the frustration.

November 12, 2005 at 3:12 pm #11844I personally would move to another spot, if possible a long ways away. I believe that if the swamp is pretty open it’s a good idea to get as far away as possible. Now, if the swamp is full I will try to find a spot somewhere with ample room. Here’s a thought guys, ever think about going home and planning on getting more sleep so you can make it out earlier the next day to get that good spot, or go fishing, or find something else to do!!!!!!!!!! Just because YOUR spot is gone doesn’t mean that you have to get somewhere within a hundred yards of it. I pretty much quit hunting the main swamps on weekends about 10 years ago. Those people aren’t hunters anyway, and if there are ducks around the real hunters won’t get a shot at them anyway because of all the Weekend Warriors. And if you guys think 100 yards is an okay distance go ahead and set up a piece of plywood at the rifle range at 100 yards. Shoot it with 2’s, BB, etc… you may change your mind.
