Just bought my first thermacell and started it up tonight and they advertise the they are scent free but I smelled the pad and it shure had a smell to it so I’m wondering if anyone has ever had a problem with deer smelling them

I’ve had a couple pads where I can smell it a little. But to answer your question I’ve never had one spoil a hunt for me. I never hunt without mine in the early season.

Personally I do not hunt with one. I have a Thermacell and often I can smell a bit of something. Maybe it is just me being paranoid and inducing a placebo like reaction, however, I look at it as another item that increases the potential for being detected. Not only have I watched friends’ videos, but personally seen, mature bucks far down wind of another hunter change its path, even though I know that hunter is quite scent cautious (not tied to Thermacells).

Likely I am just OCD on scent control, however, ever since I really took it hardcore serious, I have so many deer (including mature bucks from unsuspected locations) come right up on me and never know. I hunt a lot, and getting winded a time or two in a season will cause me to really consider my routine, not to mention all but abandon the set I was winded in. I am just always thinking “whats my potential for scent contamination, whats my routine, wheres my entry route, wheres my wind, and are there mature bucks acting different due to any disturbance I may have created now or before.”

Just my honest opinion from a scent control stand point, nothing more. Good Luck

Don’t they sell a dirt flavored (scented) pad now?

I’ve been using a Thermacell for the past 4 years and there is a faint smell to them, however, in my experience the deer do not react to it. I have had them come in from downwind relaxed as can be. I know if I can smell it they can but for whatever reason it does not put them on alert. Swatting mosquitos however does seem to alert them 100% of the time.

Do they really claim they are scent free ?? I smell mine everytime… in fact, after a week of bear hunting, your clothes even start to smell of it. I have used the original and the earth scented, I believe the earth scented smells “more” than the original… all be it earthy smelling I swear by them as working and not alerting the prey

I always hunt the wind but never had deer act adversely from them. Without one my son would never get a deer. youth season is in sept here and the misquitos are bad that time of year he would never stop moving swatting them.

They don’t claim to be scent free that I have seen, but do claim the scent doesn’t alert deer. I use mine all the time early season and haven’t been busted to my knowledge.
