I have heard is some handheld gps units that can be tracked by other units and have a radio in them. Do these exist? Basically my family is heading into the mountains for a week long elk trip and would like to be able to keep track of eachother for safety if possible. Also would like it to have google earth or some sort of topo map. I have tried shopping at gander and Cabellas but have not been lucky enough to get helped by someone who actually understands these products . Figured I would check with you boys next and any help or recommendations are appreciated.

Garmin – The first and best handheld GPS made. Here is a link to the devices with two-way radios built in.

I would recommend you consider the 5W versions, but then again they are spendy. It really comes down to how far do you plan to hunt from each other. remember these are line of site devices, so they may not work trying to go around a mountain.

The 120 only has about 8Mb of built in memory for uploading maps to. This isn’t much, so you’ll have to consider how big of an area you need to upload. If hunting from horseback, you could cover a lot of ground in a day.

To me, if you planned to step up to the 130, then I would go to the 520. You get color & expandable memory. Which would allow you to upload a bigger map.

Keep in mind, they all appear to run on rechargable battery packs. Will you have a generator at camp? That may be a consideration. It’s easy to carry in AAA batteries vs. buying extra battery packs.

Thanks Kooty :. I was pretty sure garmin was the way to go and now I just need to find these units in stock someplace so I can play with them. Good info as usual!
