I’ll be on Red Cedar in Northern Wisconsin in Barron County. Any fellow members gonna be there?

    Don:

As much as I should come down and fish an area with no ice, I am going to stick it out here in the Northwoods where my choices are lakes with or without ice!!! Personally, I have ice fished for the opener before and right now am leaning toward fishing out of the boat, instead. But I could think of some spots on Menomin and Tainter to try…

Unfortunately, I am in class until 2PM and there are a few trout I have to harrass. The boat is ready as a back up plan. Don, are you going to be out there at 12:01AM????

Im a 15 year old and i was just introduced into deer hunting (and hunting in general), and I’m looking to buy a bow so I can go next year. I’m complelty new to this though so can i get some insight somebody that wants to sell theirs I’m open to spending up to about 400-500 dollars, so any help would be appreciated!

Thanks for posting this. Many of us are/were in your shoes at one time, and I distinctly remember being about that age and looking for my first hunting bow. The good news is that what’s out there now is literally leaps and bounds ahead of what was on the market only a few years back, and with ample practice you’ll have a hard time going really wrong. It’s wise to look towards the used market, but whatever you do, make sure to head to a pro-shop like Schaffer’s to get sized/fitted for a bow. Something the right size and fit will be more important to a fun and successful experience than will the latest name/brand.

If you’re there, check out the Mission line of bows by Mathews. Reasonably priced and high on performance, I think these might be the ticket. Realize that the sport of archery involves quite a few accessories, but the high end stuff you can get bit-by-bit. Start with a good quality bow that fits and you can build from there.

I shot hand-me-down bows for years and it can be frustrating shooting a bow that is not right for you.
I now shoot a Mission and love it, not the fastest or smoothest bow out there but really nice for the price.
    good luck

    Mark,

Definitely go find out your draw length today. As I’m sure you are a growing young lad, it may change with time.

One thing to consider also, what is your dominant eye? I’ve been cursed with being a right handed person, but left eye dominant. I’ve often thought about switching to shooting left handed. I’m almost positive my shooting would improve. However, I’ve yet to make the leap of faith. As long as your are learning from scratch it may save you making a change in the future.

Look at the retail price on accessories, they tend to run as much as a bow. So, buying in the used market may allow you to pick up a bow that is all geared out.

One thing is for sure. The amount of great bows made today is unbelievable. Best of luck!

Check out the Mission line by Mathews…The Craze or Maniac would be a good fit for a young archer like yourself because they have both adjustable draw lengths and poundages that will get fit you until your done growing

It does come with a price though, you have to wear an eye black stripe under your left eye and answer to the name left-eye Lopez
But seriously shooting better than I ever have with my new sight

Not to steal this thread, but I have the same problem…shooting right handed but being left eye dominant. How about posting this idea for all of us confused shooters!
