“A woman walking her dogs near her western New York home was fatally shot Wednesday by a man who told police he mistook her for a deer.

Rosemary Billquist, 43, was hit by a bullet from a single-shot pistol fired by neighbor Thomas B. Jadlowski, said Sgt. Josh Ostrander of the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office.

Jadlowski told investigators he was 200 yards from the victim when he fired.

When Jadlowski realized his grave mistake, he called 911.”

I’m not a hunter but 200 yds with a pistol? After dark. And she was reportedly within 100 yds of her home. WTH was this guy thinking?

200 YARDs with a pistol? Can that even be right?

That was going to be my immediate response too, but I didn’t want to be “that guy” that didn’t think they were capable of that.
I don’t have much experience shooting pistols, but I cannot imagine they are real effective over 100 yards. The barrels are so short, velocity drops as does accuracy I would think…
I think he probably exaggerated the distance, but that certainly wouldn’t help his case.

    Ill be “That guy”.

I don’t know what pistol he used in this case. But I have a few friends that shot Thompson Contenders single shot pistols and frequently reach out 200 to 250 yards. One of them came out on a prairie dog shoot and was popping them at 300yrds. Very doable with the right equipment

You’d think someone who puts in that much time and effort to be that good with their weapon certainly would have the sense not to shoot.

Something doesn’t add up here imo.

Never would have imagined they were capable of that. I suppose something with a longer barrel and not the traditional glock 9mm semi auto. -) Like I said, my initial reaction was of disbelief of the distance, but no experience with those types of handguns to know what they are capable of.

When I read the o.p. with the single shot pistol a Contender was the first thing I thought of. Only because friends that have them.

Same here Randy. I have two friends with Contenders. One in 6mm and I can’t recall what the other one had. Both said don’t buy one for dog hunting because of the short barrel. Who knows what cal this guy had or if he could see out of a scope (obviously not if he did have one).

Either way, it’s a shame he couldn’t have missed.

Wow-I guess I’m not surprised there is a weapon capable of that shot…but ethically taking that kind of shot takes serious skill and practice as you alluded to in your post about the doe err buck Randy.

It almost doesn’t add up that someone capable of that shot could be so haphazard.

Factoring in the decision to shoot after sunset, in such proximity to another house and failing to identify his target has the cynic in me wondering if this was just an ill-fated really bad decision or is there is more to the story?

Either way the consequences should be steep.

    Really sad.

That thought crossed my mind as well.
