My dad said he has been on a crazy good trout bite all week and with some other things we needed to do a quick visit was in order. After the wife and son got back from Sesame Street live Saturday we packed up the minivan and headed out for southern Wisconsin to see the family and chase some trout for a couple hours the next morning.
It was late when we got to my parents so we were going to pack things up in the morning before we went, as we unpacked the van I set my poles next to my dads poles in the garage so I wouldn’t forget them. The wife, son, dad and I were all up and ready to go early and got to the lake before sunup, perfect…well almost, my fishing poles were still at my parents house. When I asked dad why he didn’t he grab them he said he didn’t see them??? I said they were right next to yours, “I don’t use those poles up here”…great. We unloaded the gear we had so dad could get setup and let my dad, wife and son start to fish while I ran back to get my poles. After a quick drive obeying all posted speed limits I was back to the lake by 7:30 and quickly had our lines in the water.
Dad has been catching them all week on set lines but I have to try jigging them in, to hard for me to just sit there and wait. The fun thing about fishing for trout is that you know when they bite, when they hit it they hit hard, and they love to chase that bait up the water column like an eye. This is really my son’s first time out on the ice actually trying to fish so the weather was perfect for him to run around and fish when he wanted in the low 30’s. The fish are your run of the mill 14-17” rainbows but they sure are fun for everyone to catch. Set lines and slender spoons were both effective, you could hole hop or wait them out. One thing that is fun with a bunch of set lines is that when they come through all the lines are going down at once. Great couple of hours with the family on the ice and hopefully just the start to Brad’s fishing addiction (towards the end he finally was able to real one in and loved it).
