I have a Hummingbird 898CSI and I vertical jig for lake trout at 100 plus fow. The unit does not show the lure going all the way to the bottom and active fish are not very visible on the screen. The unit does not seem strong enough to pick up signals at that depth. Friends say to junk the hummingbird for a lowrance. flame Could it be that the unit is not set right or maybe not powerful enough for this situation. flame

I’ve found the Si transducer to have a weak signal in 2d display. Likely that’s the problem. I run an 898 on my counsel off an Si ducer as well as a 859 through Minn Kota universal sonar. The 859 has a superior 2d signal by a long shot.

I personally like the lowrance di/si over the humminbird di/si. That’s just me, you might wa t to go out with someone who has a lowrance setup and see for yourself which one you like better.

    Hi,
a while back HB released an update for SI boxes called “Jigging mode”. There had been endless chatter SI boxes lost their 2D signal quality after update 6.490. I think Jigging mode came in around update 7.510 for my 998 CSI.

Here is a quote from Deborah
    “””
Jigging Mode – is a selection in the 2D Sonar Express Menu. It allows the user to select the sonar ping pattern for use while vertical jigging. When turned ON the ping pattern will be: 200 kHz, Left SI Beam, Right SI Beam, 83 kHz, repeat. With this mode turned OFF the ping pattern will be: 200 kHz, Left SI Beam, Right SI Beam, 83 kHz, Left SI Beam, Right SI Beam, repeat. Basically this feature prioritizes the 2D beam over the SI beam.

“” Is your box up to date???? If not give it a try.
