Humminbird Helix depth readings

New Humminbird Helix, transducer is mounted correctly. I’m struggling with the unit maintaining depth accuracy…very often under power, even down to idle speeds. Cruising it definitely loses contact.
Even when drifting or up of the trolling motor, it often starts reading in the neighborhood of 70-80ft while fishing 16 ft.

I’m ALMOST certain the ‘ducer is mounted and angled correctly with one exception. Recommended starboard mounting for my boat due to clockwise turning of the prop. I had to mount on port side; is it making THAT big a difference? Prop wash and cavitation I would understand, but the sitting still and idling issue baffles me.
I’m new again to Humminbird so any of you ‘bird owners out there can clue me in on the things I might not be looking at wrong? Settings? Something simple with ‘ducer I haven’t considered?
Any tips at all would be wonderful! Thanks!

What firmware version are you running? I know one of the recent releases “supposedly” fixed 2d sonar reading accuracy…

Depending on what model it is (G1/G2/G3), it could very well need a software update. Even if it is a recently purchased newer model. I had the exact symptoms on my Helix 7 G2N. Updated to v2.00 and now it works flawlessly. See link below to check the current version for your model.

I’ve used the FishSmart app on my phone for updates and it’s super slick to use. No messing around with chips as it’s all done through Bluetooth.

Try playing with your motor tilt before doing anything else. Mine wasn’t reading at power but once I ran the motor higher, it worked fine.
