Looking at the 859 is it worth the money for the di or should I pass? Or would a lowrance elite 7 do the trick, this unit is much cheaper. Will that reflect in the proformance? Thanks

When comparing to 2D view, the DI really shines. When objects like tree limbs, weeds that are laid over and so on enter the cone, they often appear as fish OR as a blob. Having the DI to compare the reflection with usually clarifies those types of images very well. For me in river applications, the 2D will often pick up the disturbance behind and obstruction in the current and give an “unclear” image. I have the DI running side-by-side and at a glance, I can distinguish fish or junk

DI is great when compared side by side to traditional sonar like Randy described. It opens your eyes to alot of things you’ve guessed at over the years. The DI performance on Humminbirds SIDE IMAGING unit is absolutely garbage. They shouldn’t even have this feature on the units. You watch both side by side and its like they are in two different bodies of water. Because they have no dedicated DI crystal.. you are getting a “Guess” as to whats between the cones of the side.

DI dedicated ducer.. Is well worth the upgrade in the 800 series in my opinion.
