Hello i recently bought a new boat I bought it with a Humminbird 859 HD DI combo finder with the 24v 80# I pilot Terrova with Link I have had other finders in the past but pretty cheap ones This new finder was working fine and the I pilot terrova with link and remote was working fine but other day it started having some crazy things happening now.

I Had the graph color green and the Down imaging side blue. other day i was on the water with the link cable hooked to the terrova and the hummindbird. I have never been able to get the finder to recognize is the speed. Then when i was trolling the fish finder just shut down I turn it on it runs for a little bit then says I pilot connected and shuts the power off. If i unhook the link wire the finder will work but as soon as i hook the link wire up and drop my motor in the water it shuts off. Can anyone please help me out with what could possibly be going on causing it to shut my finder off. thank you

Have you updated your bird, link remote, and link controller?

Shutting down can be low voltage on the battery. Do you have it wired direct to the starting battery or to the fuse panel?

Thank you Ron I will check out those links to

JAnderson I just recently bought a new Alumacraft boat I had it rigged up with the Humminbird 859 combo HD DI finder and the MinnKota Terrova I pilot with link. To be honest this is alot more than im used to I have been using an old eagle for the past 12+ years and its pretty simple.

The finder is Hooked to my 1000 cranking amp starting batter thats hooked to a Mercury 150 4 Stroke outboard. The voltage right now with just the finder on is 12.3 volts on my finder and the same checking it at the battery with my meter.

The power wires are hooked from the finder into the main power toggle switch on my dash then from there back to the starting battery. This problem will still happen even when im running 3/4 throttle down the lake.

I havent updated the humminbird or the link remote and controller im not sure how to do that.

Updating your unit and ipilot stuff is easy. You will first need to register you units on humminbird.com. Then they will have directions for updating. You will need an sd card to update. Update the humminbird first. Then the ipilot remote and controller next. Before updating the humminbird reset it to default using the menus.

As for the powering off as you go down the lake it sounds like you may have a bad or loose connection on your main power switch. I would try wiring straight to the cranking battery using a 3 amp inline fuse.

Check out the other forums suggested as well for more info on updating your unit. It sounds more difficult than it actually is. I can post more detailed instructions later when I have a computer and am not using my phone. There are also lots of YouTube videos about updating as well.

Also register unit at http://www.humminbirdselect.com to get an extra year of warranty after you register at humminbird.com. Humminbird select is only available for more expensive units 800 series and above.

If you bought the boat from a dealer brand new they may be able to help you with all of this as well!

Hey Thank you JAnderson i really appreciate all the help I have just finished registering the finder and i pilot. I will also check out the humminbirdselect.com to

another ? on the SD card does that have to be one from Humminbird or can it be a regualar SD card like I use in my digital camera? They didnt give me a SD card so im not sure if it came with one or not? The dealer that i bought the boat from is a 3 hours away so they arent much help Im not sure they know much on them to be honest i think its a install and you figure the rest out.

As far as the power problem with it shutting down its crazy if the electric is in the water and the link wire isnt hooked up it will work fine but if I hook the link wire up and the electric motor is down it will start that shut down by its self Oh and it flashes really quick I pilot connected then goes into the shut down automatically.

Thanks again i really appreciate all the help and info.

Any SD card should work. If you have one from your camera, save the pics onto your computer, format it, then use to update.

Yes any card should work…make sure you format the card before hand as he said before updating. The only file on the card should be the update…nothing else!!!! When done updating unit…delete that
(format again) and download the two updates for the ipilot stuff.

Is sounds like there is a loose connection somewhere in your system. I remember when I got my new boat a few years back I had to go through an tighten everything down. The battery terminals were not tight at all and my engine quit while running down the lake on the maiden voyage. I thought I blew up my engine or something..but it was just not tightened down. Check everything carefully!

Check the trolling motor plug connections as well. It sounds like the problem is coming from the trolling motor since it works well wehn not hooked up. Hopefully someone else can jump in here for some other ideas…where are you located? Maybe we can suggest a place to take it and help.

Thanks guys I got the SD card and went to Humminbird.com and i have my finder registered it shows it and i went to updates /software and down loaded it and saved it but I cant get it to save to my SD card. Dam Its kicking my butt im ready to pull the last little bit of hair out that i have.

I also tried to register my I pilot on the humminbird page and click the Add button but nothing happens. I dont know its getting late I guess i will pound on the computer again tomorrow and see what I can come up with.

Oh Im way out in Wyoming. Im in the middle of no where with no much around. It looks simple in my humminbird manual to down load the new software but so far no luck. thanks trfishin

It can be kind of a pain to get the updates on the sd card. I save it to my desktop. Open my folders, click on desktop, drag the file so it is hovering over the sd card slot and release. It should move it from your desk to your card if you do this. Again, there are probably some youtube videos that you can watch on the process of saving files to your sd card. It may help if you let us know what kind of computer you have.

When I first tried to register my ipilot link as well it would not let me add it either. There is a “live chat” button on the humminbird site. I had to click on that and speak to customer service before I could add it. They emailed me the updates so I could have them while I waited to register. Also, make sure you are registering the i-pilot link. Your trolling motor has a sepearate serial number that needs to be register through Minn Kota. You only reigster the link on humminbird and not your trolling motor itself.

Thanks JAnderson I’ll check that out to. I upgraded my finder today that worked but every time I deploy my terrovia with the link / Ethernet cable hooked up turn on my finder shortly after it pops up I pilot connected then automatically shuts my finder off

If I unhook Ethernet link cable the finder works fine. Humminbird is sending me a new Ethernet cable to try I sure hope it works
