PM his name and general area he is hunting poaching and I’ll take care of it for you.

It’s pretty obvious he isn’t going to change his ways with a simple conversation with you. The only thing that will change is he may not let you in on his secret going forward. So the crime will still be committed, you just won’t know about it.

That thought has crossed my mind.

Edit – If I turn him in he will know it’s me.

I wouldn’t count on you being the only one that is in on his little secret… people like that generally aren’t the brightest crayon in the box. He probably enjoys telling people about it and that is part of the rush he gets from doing it.

I have been in a similar situation like you EPG for many years. My wife’s family does all kind of illegal things when it comes to deer hunting which is why we don’t hunt with them. In fact my wife would rather not hunt than hunt with her dad. For many years I didn’t say anything to keep the peace like you. I talked to friends and they said the same thing, just keep the peace. Well it kept eating at me knowing what they were doing and being proud of it. I finally saw one of them post a picture on Facebook where they were in the stand with no blaze on so I called the dnr. I thought this would get them involved without leading back to me since it was on social media. It wasn’t really enough to make it worth their time (I understand they are busy) and since they couldn’t catch them doing something worse I don’t think anything happened but I did give names and location so at least I tried and that has helped me personally. Only you can decide if it’s worth it but if it was me I would at least try to do something to make the person realize what they are doing is wrong and if that’s the only way you can shoot a deer then your not a true sportsman.

This sucks, plain and simple. I have a neighbor who thinks pheasant limits are recommendations on his land. I say something every time he makes a comment, and I can see my words go in one ear and out the other. What drives me nuts is the guys who do this always talk about it in a manner that is bragging. Like it is cool or something. When you call them on it, you are lame, or a government stooge. Most of the people I know who are guilty are raising young kids too which makes me think this behavior will just be passed down like other bad traits. Sad…

My grandpa always said those who sat the front needed to hear the message the most. That is why he sat in the back… doah

Funny that he would show up a half hour early for church to get a spot in the back and then complain when the pastor got long winded and went 5 minutes too long…

I could fill a whole thread with comments my grandpa made.

Sorry, side tracked. Carry on and find a way to to get him reported EPG. Sorry for the dilemma your “friend” has put you in. Sucks.

I say report him in a way that keeps you anonymous. Is he shooting mostly bucks? Nice ones? That would really grind my gears. Less chances for other people to get a nice buck. Totally not fair and so f**ked!!!

i’ve read this whole thread with interest. dang tough decision to make. interesting feedback also.

i’d suggest just telling him to QUIT teeling you about it EPG…….but that doesnt fix the fact he’s still taking game illegally. and i dont care if it was a squirrel or a deer!!!! doah

The biggest ones usually sit in the front row.

Amen to that (no pun intended). Either the ones in the front row or the one upfront doing the talking.

If they’re willing to poach deer, they’re not my kind of people and are likely an idiot. I do my best not to associate with idiots. Turn him in and feel better about ditching the anchor of a friend who ruins the reputation of outdoorsmen everywhere. There’s not a lot of grey area here or really what I’d even consider a “dilemma”

Obviously it bothers you, yet it does not seem to bother him . Options tell him you do not want to hear about it or turn his ass in ! You could ask him why he feels compelled to keep telling you why he is doing this .

Tough decision for sure. Do not envy you. Thought from me. Perhaps start bragging to him about all the tip line rewards you got. Maybe see if you could somehow get a DNR check to show him.

Man, surprised by all the wishy washy responses here, I thought this group was all about law and order?

**George Floyd gets executed publicly for allegedly using a fake $20 bill and later allegations about using fentanyl or having that in his system**

“Well you know, he shouldn’t have been in that position, if you don’t want to be murdered by the police, maybe don’t break any law ever under any circumstance no matter what. He was a drug user, so obviously he was no saint, he probably deserved it. Who know what crimes this guy COULD have committed in the past you know?”

** My ‘friend’ is constantly sending me irrefutable evidence of poaching, a clear breach of the law and on top of that, a law that outdoorsmen should take very seriously. Also, guy attends a church. **

“Oh golly, that’s a dilly of a pickle there. That must be so hard for you EPG, maybe just politely ask him, but I’d hate for you to have to ruin a friendship over something so trivial as breaking a few eensy-weensy poaching laws. Maybe just let him keep doing it, after all, it’s a ‘victim-less’ crime.”

Put your money where your mouth is. You don’t get to have it both ways. Turn this dude in. Do it anonymously if you want. Weird how people’s opinions/attitudes change when they are personally involved eh?

Heck it’s an interesting and difficult situation. I think what I would do would be to repost his picture on FaceBook or other sites stating it’s an illegal buck, pretty nice huh as apparently he sends you them without regard, unless he states….between you and me. Also I’d say to him, stop involving me as YOU are putting me right in the middle of this and I cannot or will not lie for you if confronted. If you want to break the law, I don’t want to be involved, end of story. My best friends brother is a known poacher, especially with fish. Has been caught enough times to learn an expensive lesson. People have turned him in but it’s tough unless caught in the act. However with deer it’s a little easier as there is a record of registration, even if done over the phone like it is in Minnesota these days. It’s work being a trusted friend these days, unfortunately.

Some years ago, before there was social media, maybe some 30 years ago we lived in a row townhouse complex and knew most other residence. Dave came over every so often during hunting season and offer us packages of deer meat. We accepted on his 2nd stop which was the first week of hunting that year.
Next week he asked if we wanted more. Well after seeing how it was processed and tasted we declined and thanked him.

Week 3 of hunting season, Sunday morning we saw a strange vehicle in a parking spot next to the garbage dumpsters. You couldn’t see the vehicle when pulling into the parking lot. Of course, after a few hours, garbage had to be taken out to see what was going on. It was the DNR in an unmarked vehicle. Hum, we suspected they were watching for ‘Deer hunting Dave’. At 2 PM another vehicle took the spot, and garbage had to go out again. It was another unmarked vehicle that had 2 DNR officers in it.

Around 6PM we heard a loud muffler and looked out. Deer hunting Dave had returned home and parked 2 cars down from the DNR. He didn’t even get out of his truck when they walked up. They took 2 rifles from the Truck, put them in theirs and walked him into his house. A little while later they came out with multiple coolers which we could only assume were full of deer, loaded them up and took him and the coolers away. Tow truck arrived and took his truck also.
His wife and children moved out about 2 months later, we never saw him again after the day the DNR took him.

We found out from another neighbor a year later that they not only took out multiple poached deer, but hundreds of bags of fish from 3 freezers.
Not sure if the DRN has the resources to do something like this again, but they must have been tipped off.

Would we have turned him in if we suspected poaching? Yes. But we didn’t know if what he was offering us was from that year or from a prior year. Now that we’ve been hunting ourselves for many years, we know should have seen the signs.

All I know is he will not stop poaching unless he gets caught and then he still might break the law. Most game violators keep right on violating.
They skip buying licenses after getting caught and their privleges are revoked.
Anyone read a list of CO enforcement citations? Many of them are on 1st name basis with CO and not because they’re friends! I’ve seen where some offenders get caught twice in a month!

I’ve had better luck directly contacting the CO in my area. You can look up their cell number on the DNR website
