How to find out year and model # of Johnson 25hp motor

Just bought this 14′ aluminum duraboat and finding out all the reasons I got the deal I did. Most problems have been fixed but the biggest is the fact that the 25hp Johnson tiller 15″ short shaft motor is mounted on a 20″ transom. Not enough room to cut transom due to support bar so I’ve decided a 5″ extension kit is best route. But in trying to find what year and model the motor is I find that the plate is missing. Can anyone help me find out what year and model this thing is?

Should be a tag on the vertical part of the mounting clamp. IIRC it should be on the left side of clamp. Has a model number and serial number. You can tell the year by that. If you find it send it to me in a PM and I can look it up for you.

The plate is missing but I found the model and serial number on the powerhead plug. Now trying to find a gear case extension kit for it and coming up short. Any suggestions for where to find one?

Did you contact Tim’s Outboard, now that you have a model and serial number? Another source is Twin City Outboard.

I actually went back to my last post where you sent Tim’s link but was after 5 so I emailed him. I will check twin City as well. Thanks Dave!

You can check your year by lookin at your birth certificate. Wait, wrong Johnson…

I had a really tough time finding parts locally when I had a 1980 Johnson. I had the best luck on eBay.

Found a few parts for it on eBay but not an extension kit. Really about to the point of selling the motor and just finding one to work with this boat. This has become a huge hassle and I just want to go fishing! I traded a nice fishing kayak for this boat and now have no way to go

Looks like a lower unit with the extension kit but I wouldn’t pay the price and shipping for a working motor that old. I bought a 1979 35 HP Johnson, long shaft about 20 years ago for $300

I think the 25HP Johnson I had was a 1981 and I had a few problems, the Wisconsin river is full of sand and sandbars and having a motor that pulls the water for cooling from behind the prop is not a good idea. One year mice built a nest in the air intake that I couldn’t see when removing the shroud, get up to full throttle and mouse nest gets sucked into the carb and it runs like crap. Then something happened with the tiller handle because of the finger gears it uses for throttle, I don’t remember if the fingers broke or if it was something inside the tiller handle

Thanks! I actually got ahold of Tim’s outboard and already ordered the whole kit for $100 and it matches my model number. Thanks for everyone’s help. Stay tuned though, after I get the kit I may have another question or two about the install haha
