How to Clean a Tile Shower

I’m on well water the the tile shower needs a good cleaning. It has an orange tinge to it and so it needs something more than your average mild cleaner which I have used before with little effect. I don’t think it’s expensive tile or anything special. I would just like a good cleaning and the grout too.

    Any recommendations?

Have you tried CLR? May need a few attempts at it.

Otherwise some carpet cleaning guys also have a pressure washing attachment that cleans grout amazingly and doesn’t make a mess.

Just be sure to reseal the grout once you get it cleaned.

Have you tried “The Works Toilet Bowl Cleaner?”

I wonder if star brite hull cleaner would work. It is impressive how that stuff takes off stains from a boat hull.

Make sure you have the exhaust fan running….on high. Maybe put a fan on the floor to blow extra air into the room. Lots of those cleaners create fumes that you really don’t want to be spending a lot of time sucking in.

That stuff is merely muratic acid or concrete cleaner. Very hard on your skin and lungs.

Maybe try Iron Out. Think there is directions on the container to ise it for cleaning.

Next get the water softener fixed or replaced to avoid this in the first place.

Have your water tested if you are worried about iron. A normal salt based softener will remove very small amounts of iron(up to about 1ppm). Amounts of iron more than that will require iron treatment/removal methods be used, so see your water treatment specialist in your area.

Rid-O-Rust stain remover. Works wonders on removing rust stains from irrigation overspray. Says it works on grout too.

CLR is not working. The Works is not working. Zep Shower and Tile is not working. What a PITA job.

Does it get to a point where the tile just needs to be replaced? Are tile showers more high-maintenance than other showers?

Just super annoyed right now. Here are some pics you can see how the grout lines change where the water hits

Try Barkeeper’s Friend scouring powder. It was recommended to me by a nurse who has “very persuasive qualities” : ) Tried it and it works great on hard water deposits and soap scum.

You could try a rust remover in gel form.

The area has to stay wet with product for it to work, a gel might work better on vertical surfaces.

Lindyrig79, Tho I will be of no help to your existing issue unless you decide to rout out the existing grout and regrout. But if you do,,, Bostick (and others as well) makes a grout product that I learned about building national chain restaurants. It is the closest thing to using the nasty epoxy grouts that maybe required in their kitchens. Urethane grout has been my answer so far. I’ve only been involved in using this for 15 ish years so far and I try to keep in touch with customers with is and do visual inspections within the 1st, 3rd and 5th years after the install. I have this in my own home on 2 different installs.

The grout is color true to color throughout and has matching caulk in smooth and sanded tubes. Easily 15 to 25 colors I don’t remember. Remember as always it is the PREP of the install that is THE most important part! Complete WATERPROOFing, backing for accessories and complete attention to detail is to be of the utmost importance.

Are you using a power brush in combination with the cleaner? I had a similar situation and it wasn’t the chemical so much as the method that turned out to be the issue. The brush that goes on a drill helped me immensely.

Thanks John23. That was my next thought… some type of drill bit / adapter . Not sure if I can get one at a box store but I will look
