HOW STIMULUS WORKS….with a slight tongue in the cheek!

It is a slow day in the small Alaskan town of Pumphandle, and streets are deserted. Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody is living on credit. A tourist visiting the area drives through town, stops at the motel, and lays a $100 bill on the desk saying he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs to pick one for the night. As soon as he walks upstairs, the motel owner grabs the bill and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher. The butcher takes the $100 and runs down the street to retire his debt to the pig farmer. The pig farmer takes the $100 and heads off to pay his bill to his supplier, the Co-op. The guy at the Co-op takes the $100 and runs to pay his debt to the local prostitute, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer her “services” on credit. The hooker rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill with the hotel owner. The hotel proprietor then places the $100 back on the counter so the traveler will not suspect anything.

At that moment the traveler comes down the stairs, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, picks up the $100 bill and leaves. No one produced anything. No one earned anything. However, the whole town is now out of debt and now looks to the future with a lot more optimism. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how a Stimulus package works.

So… the hotel is out $100? Damn stimulus money.

I need to find a hooker that takes credit. Lol.

No, the motel is not out the $100. The owner has used it already to pay off his debt with the butcher.

This is a great story Denny O

One which will require much deeper thinking on economic theories.

Thanks, I’ll have plenty to keep my head occupied for the coming days. grin

You’re right, he cleared his debt but lost his profit.

the prostitute owed the hotel owner $100 large and when she paid him, the guy looking for a room took it…so now he’s out $100 again.

    Darn riddles.

Interesting analogy, but if you are comparing it to the stimulus check you would have to replace the traveler with a bank (the government), after the hotel owner got his 100 and the money made its round trip, not taking into account anyone owing interest on there debt, he would get his hundred back. then he would go back to the bank (the government) to repay the loan. Depending on how long he had the money they would require interest as well as the hundred back. If the bank didn’t charge interest on the loan they wouldn’t be there very long. when the government “gives you money” they either go into debt (sell bonds) or they just print more money which causes inflation, either way it needs to be paid back with interest. I realize the gov. will collect sales tax on any new purchases made with the stimulus and the the money will make the rounds but if people are just paying off debt, the sales tax is already paid. Even if its used for all new purchases the return from taxes likely wont pay the “interest” on the loan. Am I missing something? Man I must be bored today!
