I have a bunch of pics of this deer, but he looks really young to me in these pics. How old do you think he is?

3.5 I think.. He looks pretty lanky still and has a pretty trim stomach. I think I can see some bumps at the bases of his rack.. Where Im from its pretty rare to get those in the first couple of growing seasons. Pretty cool he is growing them straight up.
August 7, 2017 at 8:20 am #1708684I would guess he’s only 2-3. He’s got a pretty decent rack but some bucks can be early growers and plateau early in life. There’s an article I found about a guy in NY that tracks a buck from birth to death with photo’s each year. Might be useful info.

Jeff SchomakerPosts: 396August 7, 2017 at 1:27 pm #17087882.5 is exactly where I put him also, but then I get other pics that get me to wondering. Is this the same deer? You still think 2.5 YO?

CaptainMuskyPosts: 22783August 7, 2017 at 1:46 pm #1708795Appears to be the same deer to me. I am terrible at aging deer so I will take the consensus of those here. Looks to be a real good one though in the future!

Double brows? Nice! I agree he looks young too, but a side shot might be a better judge.

I’m no expert on aging deer on the hoof, but he looks older than 2.5 to me.
Jeff SchomakerPosts: 396August 14, 2017 at 3:03 pm #1710010I’ll join in on the fun. How old do you guys think he is? Me and a few friends think 3.5

Based just on time length and spread at least 3.5. Do you have any better pics with more lighting?
Jeff SchomakerPosts: 396August 14, 2017 at 4:41 pm #1710040Nope. Only pic of him. But I’ve only had the camera out since Tuesday so I’m sure I’ll see him again. The farm he’s on has been known to have giants on it so we shall see. He has good genetics that’s for sure.
rjohnson8404Posts: 199August 14, 2017 at 6:39 pm #1710049I tend to agree with the 3.5.
Buck seems like he hasnt filled out. Kind of skinny tooAugust 14, 2017 at 8:22 pm #1710060Describing what region these deer are coming from will help with estimates. 3.5 year olds from SE MN look very different than 3.5 year olds from the Northern 1/3rd of the state on most occasions.
Jeff SchomakerPosts: 396August 15, 2017 at 5:45 am #1710093Here’s a side view and up close. I’m thinking 2.5
From that side view he has a pretty thick body, might just be the pose, but I’d guess him at 3.5

Mine are from the metro area of MN

Again, tough angle to age a deer at, but I would agree with 3.5…although in SW Iowa that could be the size of a 1 year old

I can’t decide if this one is 3.5 or 4.5. Saggy belly, strong chest, front quarters about the same size as back quarters, relatively big head for this time of year… sure do like the double split brows though.

I think you’re spot on. I would not be surprised if that deer was 4.5+. I bet that deer looks like a tank come October. Like you said deep chest and drooping belly. Their necks always look skinny this time of year regardless of age.
