How many rods do you bring?

Not exactly sure what my question is but if you go walleye or crappie fishing and bring multiple rods for that species, other than having a spare why bring more?
If you bring three walleye rods let’s say, do you have them pre baited for fast bait change on an investigating fish that comes on the flasher?
Or do they all have different line?

I bring 4, and 2 tip ups. One for bobber, one for waxies/larvae, the other for walleyes with a larger jig, and the last one for my ice rigger tip up.

A lot of times I will have two rods rigged the same way for perch fishing.

If the school is hot, and you need to get back down, drop the first rod, grab the second and drop it down fast!

I bring 4 rods. Three rigged with 6# Nanofil and I fish walleye crappie and perch with this set-up on a deadstick tip-up. My 4th rod is a noodle rod with 4# mono for jigging gills and other panfish. I’ll set out two deadsticks and jig with a third. If I get tired of jigging I’ll set out a third tip-up.

I’ve been fishing eyes crappie and perch this weekend and I have been taking five. A dead stick rod, a noodle type rod for tungstens, a light jigging rod for small spoons, a ml rod for rippin raps and med spoons, and a medium for jigging raps and larger lippless cranks. I might bring another heavier rod if there is a chance at bigger eyes or pike.

Usually 4 is sufficient for me.

Always bring the 6 that are in my rod case, but rarely do I ever use all 6 each time.

When fishing ‘eyes, I usually bring 6…but use the same 3-4 consistently. I have one dedicated dead-stick, 3 very similar rods I use for jigging spoons, and one that I almost exclusively run minnow-style baits on (rippin’ raps, darters, etc). I’ll usually leave one UL/L rod in the case on the off chance target species changes.

That’s also with me leaving about 6-8 walleye ice rods at home as well….no one tell my wife that otherwise I’ll never be allowed to buy another whistling whistling whistling

Good that you don’t use all 6 at the same time. smile

With that many rods already, would you ever need to buy another? razz

I agree though on always having an UL on hand. As much as you might want to catch a walleye, if there are only perch down there…you might just have to downsize everything and go after whatever is biting.

I bring two per species being fished. Sometimes 3 or 4 if its a big walleye or perch trip just so I can have each tied differently.

About 75% of the time I spend ice-fishing, I’m targeting panfish. The other 25% of the time I’ll run tip-ups with a large group for pike.

I take 4 rods on every outing. 1 noodle rod will always have a small tungsten jig ready for spikes/waxies. Another ultra light rod will have a small tungsten jig with some type of plastic. My 3rd rod is always dedicated as a dead stick. The 4th rod is a backup. Once in a while I’ll throw in a 5th heavier, medium action rod rigged with a “First Strike” flag for pike.

It is extremely rare that I fish with a dead stick. If panfish are hitting so slow that a dead stick is worth being deployed, I’ll generally relocate.

As many as my hard sided case can hold. 3 without worry, up to 5 but it’s crammed.

I usually panfish and rig each rod up with a different presentation. That way if I am marking fish but not catching them, I can quickly and easily switch to a different presentation. The problem comes when my rods range every where in between from a Bullwhip to a $5 wal mart special, to a Jason Mitchel broken tip. I’ll put what I think will be the best presentation on the Bullwhip and fish that as long as possible and try to avoid the crappy poles. If I had a case full of TUCR then it’d be a whole different story!

For walleye, I have 5 to 6 rods in my case, but usually only have 2 out. I have rods I built for specific applications and use them accordingly.

I take 4 because thats all I have. And thanks to tuma for the great idea, they will be a lot easier to carry around this season.

So far this year I’ve only brought my rod case that holds 4 rods with me. 2 Panfish Rods, 2 Eye/Pike rods
