The right gear and I can be out all day. I mainly walk to my spots all year.
I certainly don’t hole hop much when it’s below zero and I tend to fish lakes I know spots. That allows me to get the shelter setup and have a home base to stay warm.
I also never let my hands get wet…I wear latex gloves under my heavy gloves so my hands are protected from getting wet. That’s been a game changer for me, especially if trying to move around to spots in the cold.
I could sit in my shack no matter how cold it is. Walking to and from I sweat my nuts off sooo. Likely do to my chiseled physique. Like Matt said will hit spots that I know are more prone to hold fish. If I strikeout oh well beats sitting on the couch watching ice fishing shows. No offense James and IDO
I watch just not when I can be fishing.

None taken.
The GF outfitted herself with some premium warm gear and now has desire to fish snow or shine on New Years Eve. I will be spending Friday morning scouring my waypoints for the shortest possible walk and telling myself “I am a man” to the mirror.
I will be out all weekend. Atv and hiking. Its only cold if you tell your self it’s cold.
It will be warm in the wheel house. Going up tomorrow morning.
Going to try it today. I heard people are driving out up here… I’m going to need to sit and watch a few other people do it first but I really hope I can, would make it a lot easier! Backup spot I’ll try is 1/4 mile walk from access.
Plan on walking .5 miles to a spot today. I never do as well if I drive to a spot, not sure why that is.

You drive to the wrong spots
I went out early this morning and my phone dies a minute after exposing it to the cold. Could not get it to work so I couldnt find my waypoint. Drilled 14 holes but couldnt find my water. Caught a few then gave up. Long walk! Going someplace different this afternoon.
West metro today saw around 30 trucks on area lake. Then made it up to willmar and trucks everywhere. Might put the big house out tomorrow.
Will be out tomorrow morning west of the metro. First time on ice for me. Can’t wait! I’ll try remember to post a report.
Only time lately to fish will be this weekend. Not gonna go out bc a lil wind-chill.
Guys in Canada would consider this normal
Headed to the horseshoe chain Sunday Morning, suppose to be -25
Nope, I’m going to hunker down with the dawgs and stay comfy.
Next week when I be up north there are a couple 10-15 below nites then I’ll deal with it.
The wind makes all the difference.
I had a crazy idea today while sitting in my flip-over.
What if I brought my hub tomorrow, and put it over flip-over!?
It’s like two condoms. Twice the protection!!

Yeah but do you keep fishing if one flys off?

Sure do!
No I don’t fish the Arctic surges often… mainly because the fish are considerably more tight lipped in my experience. Today we hammered river crappies out in front of this cold snap. I’d bet a large sum of money we could hike to the same area this weekend and have significantly poorer results. Cold snaps = chance to get work done for me
Also, the fact that the cold snap falls on a weekend makes me even less likely to fish. Fishing is a weekday/night activity for me most of the time
Here in southeastern Wisconsin were in a need of a cold front so I’m all for it. We have about 1” of ice on our lakes right now.
Drove out on Lida and found maybe a dozen willing crappies. A stiff drink was far more appealing after a couple hours
Fishing/spearing was slow last two days shows 17 below right now saying El Paso for today.
Happy New Year! It’s a balmy -33 up here this morning! Was going to go out yesterday but me and one of my kids are both sick. Would have been a good day to go too!
I’ll fish in these temp on an out of town fishing trip with buddies but it’s really hard to motivate myself to go at it alone.
It looks like a good day to stay inside. The fish will wait another day. Stay safe!
Happy New Year!
Ooops. I don’t know how to delete one of the screenshots. Sorry.
These cold days are great for trout too!
The biggest issue I have with fishing in these bitter temps is stuff tends to break really easy and a simple fishing trip can get real expensive fast! I’ve seen numerous heaters go, trucks/snowmobiles not start, axels break on trailers, transmission lines break on trucks, fish house windows crack and break. The list is endless. But once I get to my spot and set up, temps don’t really matter because I’m usually a sweaty mess anyway.
