How long will the snow stay?

This is what I could find for St Cloud’s totals, according to NOAA. They are only at 47.5 inches this winter as of March 10, and the all time record is 84.5 inches set in 2013.

No way that is right. Not your fault, but the graphic I saw a few weeks ago said St Cloud at 76″ to that time. Then I checked St Cloud State’s records and they are all over the map. Pretty frustrating they cant figure out to have decent reporting on this stuff. Heck, just last week they said St Cloud had 11″ on the ground. Um, its probably close to 3 times that.
I did read that the moisture content in the snowpack is nearly 300% of normal winter precip so that rain will not be going to waste.

    From a SCSU meteorology professor..

“St. Cloud had 3.6 inches of new snow Saturday into Sunday morning, bringing the cold season total to 74.0 inches. That still ranks 7th in St. Cloud records, but we have covered most of the gap between 7th and 5th place.

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport has 80.3 inches, which ranks 7th in their records so far. Duluth has 116.4 inches for the season, which ranks as the 7th snowiest in Duluth records so far.”

Captain, if anybody asks how much it snowed or how much you have just reply “a lot”. That will cover anything that really matters.

    Would “a s**tload” be acceptable?

These sum it up quite well.

Im trying to find who posted the graphic of YTD snowfall totals. I thought it was Novak weather, but not seeing it anymore. I am pretty sure it was either 67 or 76 for St Cloud and they said that is second snowiest which is odd based on what Joe posted above.

I didn’t think that was accurate either.

Looks like Joe found some pretty accurate info though. waytogo

OK I found the graphic. It was posted by MN Weather on spacelook. 64.8″ for St Cloud as of March 1st. 71.4″ for the Twin Cities. Since then we have had at least 10 inches which puts Joe’s numbers dead on.

It’s going to suck in July when I can’t see my fishing boat on the lift over the snow bank….

Looks like a lot of us are kind of feeling the same way. It’s made me ask myself a question the past week and I would be interested in how others feel as well:

What would you rather have, snow or cold?

I feel like this winter is a perfect example to go off. Snow removal has been, at times, a daily task. For those in the country and with long driveways it’s been a part time job just to be able to get out of the driveway.

BUT…..this winter seems to have been not real bad for frigid weather. I’m talking like winters not that long ago where we’d go a 2-week stretch with daytime highs maybe getting to 5. Where getting two kids in and out of car seats damn near seems like a matter of life and death. You walk into a building and your nostril hairs are frozen and you can’t move your cheeks.

Just wondering what everyone would prefer if you had the choice.

Oh I would 100% rather take the snow over brutal cold. January was actually quite nice for a change.

We have plans to make a rather long drive ( 2+ Hrs ) to a hot bite. Be nice to not have to worry about the roads to get there.

    Go on!

The roads up were not to bad. a little slower trip but overall not to bad. The good fishing more than made up for it. My buddy and I limited out on both Sunfish and crappies. A buddy and his wife joined us and also got their limit of each. All the sunfish were in the 8.0 -9.25″ range and the Crappies were in the 11.5-14″ range Most in the 12.5 size. The area got clobbered with 7-9″ of heavy wet snow on Sat. with 40 MPH winds. The plowed road was starting to get flooded with water by the time headed home on Friday. I hate to think what all the additional snow did to it on Sat. My guess is its a real sloppy wet mess out there now. Not sure the plow truck that clears the road will be able to keep it open now.

We have only had 10 nights below zero all winter, and the average is 21. Don’t think we’ll get anymore now.

Given the state of drought heading into winter, I’d rather have the snow.

I’d take the snow 100/100 times over the cold.

I know everyone here is griping about this winter, but I’ve found it to be quite pleasant…

Now talk to me in 3 weeks and if we’re still in this mess then maybe I’ll change my answer..

I’d take the cold over the snow. My home has heat. My auto has heat. If I want my fish house has heat. I can always add another layer of warm cloths. The snow has to be dealt with. Either I or someone’s else has to move or clear it. Too much of either is bad for the wildlife. I think we are going to see far less fawns born this spring. It’s been a real rough year in the deer around here. Even with a feeder out the deer have not been to it in several days. My guess is just to much snow to try and get over to it.

    Totally agree,

I look at the DNR’s winter severity index frequently and except in a few areas of the state it doesn’t show it all that bad .

With that being said they add points for snow totals and temps below 0. Haven’t had many below 0. Snow totals shock doah

You can put me down for 25 degrees and let it snow. It’s not even the cold, it’s the wind & cold that sucks. Right now it’s 27 degrees here with crystal clear sky’s. It’s really nice out.

Remember how windy it was last fall-winter-spring? Last winter was so much worse for me because of the cold. Went into April. And we barely got any snow because of it.

The snow is getting old, but so much better than the brutal cold.

Got a report from the neighbor at my farm east of Hinckley. 5-6 more inches of snow fell this past weekend at his place.

There has to be 26-30 inches of snow on the ground in many places at my farm. And there are some drifts and filled-in low spots that are 36-40 inches deep.

I don’t see a lot of chance of significant melting over the next 7-10 days. Yes, it will be melting on hillsides, parking lots, etc, but out in the woods, fields, lakes, etc there isn’t a lot of hope for a quick melt.

Just what we need. More snow. It started out this morning as Rain ( Fair amount of it ) it has now turned to snow and is coming down rather hard. The hourly forecast is showing another 5-6 Hrs of it. I sure hope it does not fall at this rate for 5-6 more hours. Its also going to be some real heavy wet crap when done. The Winter weather advisory is saying 2-4″. At this rate it will be on the higher side by the time its all done. The rain early did seem to compress the snow down a fair amount in a short amount of time so that was nice.

I left work in St Cloud at 1030, took me 30 minutes to get to St Stephen for lunch. Total pucker factor going on. Left St Stephen for home about 10 minutes ago and couldnt even see a block. Its super windy and plows have not been out. Drove 30MPH and that was probably too fast. Weve got close to 4 inches already but its hard to tell because its blowing and this wet crap compacts to fast.
