How High's the Water, Mama?

I don’t mind some high water, but this is ridiculous.

What landings will still be open next weekend? I’d think Roschen, Hok si La, Pickle Factory and everything in Wabasha will for sure be closed or unusable on the lower end.

this morning I thought the air was a bit heavy from all of the humidity,I happened to look out the window when something going by caught my eye.
it was two catfish and a walleye !!
well that explained the heavy air, time to move to higher ground!! sheesh !!

This wet cycle can end anytime now. Out in western mn we had a wet fall, lots of snow, and wet spring. We have a 100 acre pond that went up 5 ft and finally found an outlet over land. It’s crazy We just want to get the crops in!!! Haha

The dock at Plug Hat Flats, Big Winnie, high water here also, sure the corps of engineers are holding back water. B ring waders, or walk the plank

A notice from the Corp about 6 weeks ago stated they weren’t holding water back. But I don’t know anything about that area.

All the locks are open with a herd of tows heading our way.

L&D #3 is on track for a new record for having it’s rollers out of the water.

And Bucky, just for days ago the readings weer showing Pool 4 to hit 10 feet by this Friday. Now it’s projected to be 13′ (it’s always high on the first forecast) but even if hits 12′ Memorial weekend will be a bust for the businesses along the river and most fishermen.

    (sigh)

Still hoping for manageable water levels on June 7th. Any chance or not really unless it stops raining after this week?

Brian, If that forecast becomes reality how fishable is pepin for a novice to the area (fished pepin once before). Supposed to take the boat up Sunday/Monday but if it’s more risk/hassle than it’s worth I may just leave it and go site seeing instead.

Let’s hope the projected levels are a bit high for the first run. It originally said 13.2′ in Wabasha (which easily closes all the landings down there and the Slipperys restaurant). Now they’ve got it up to 13.9′ by the weekend which closes even the parking lot area into the marinas.

“Manageable” is a very relative term. If you’re looking to fish the lake area, you will be fine as long as you can find a launch that isn’t flooded (which will be tough – bring boots) and don’t expect to have a usable dock at most places. If you want to be out cruising around in the channel areas pleasure boating or attempting to stop on some sandbars, I’d definitely reconsider any trip in the next couple of weeks.

Either way – make sure everyone on board wears their PFD. The river is dangerous enough when it is at flood stage. Now as we are getting into summer more, traffic will pick up and the number of people with minimal experience running around will be on the rise with each coming weekend. It is a dangerous combination.

    What Bucky said ^.

This mornings revise forecast is at 12.9 for this weekend. I still think that’s a bit high.

It’s going to be tough to find a place to launch out of on the upper end. All the city launches will close at 12.5. Well Bay Point might make it.

I think the holiday traffic will be lower than it’s been in years.
Pepin won’t see the effects of the high water as much as the upper river section.

New to the river? Go to a lake. At 12.5′ this isn’t a good time to learn it.

Any of you guys know what water level the Pickle Factory ramp gets closed? I was planning to go out of Pepin on the weekend of June 8th.

There is more on the way between Saturday night and Sunday evening we had 2.45 inches of rain all headed down towards the river.

At 12’on the Wabasha gauge they didn’t have the dock in. I’m not sure they’d actually “stop” people from launching on that bank/landing there. Without a full size 4wd truck, roller trailer, and a boat you don’t mind beaching on river rock, it’s going to be a while. The actual landing is too flat when the water gets this high at the Pickle. A few locals will dump older boats off the rock shore as it’s a predictable slope but hard on keels. It’s on the rise currently and the receding water usually takes longer than the time it takes to crest.

    Slightly off subject Bucky,

The FW and I were thinking of taking the big fishing boat to the Pickle Factory Saturday or Sunday. You said the PF’s dock isn’t in. is there any docking access at the marina for a 40 footer?

I should just call I ‘spose. By the weekend shtuff can change.

Even at 14′ like it is now in lake city, how usable is the roschen park access or should I be checking with Hanson harbor or something else for ease of launch?

Roschen is launchable now. I had to take my boat out for a test run yesterday evening and conditions there were fine. The dock was in. However, I don’t know how much longer it will stay that way. Water is almost to edge of parking lot, so another foot or two and I imagine it will get pretty tricky to launch there.

I’m guessing same situation at Hok Si La, but haven’t been by there recently.

Does anyone know if Hanson harbor lets you launch for a fee? And at what point their launch floods? Or should I call down there? How is the current at roschen access? I’m hoping it comes back down to current levels and isn’t an issue. Just trying to be prepared. I would imagine the bite will be alright with high water and water warming up. Is it still ok to troll along the trees to locate fish with the river at this level or better to cast up tight cause they will be upright in the trees or will just have to experiment?

When I was talking about the dock, I was mentioning their launching dock just below the Pickle by 50 yards or so. Their “mooring” dock that’s substantially bigger right off the Pickle deck may house a 40′ boat when it’s in the water and not busy. If they’re accessible and open it’s probably going to be tough to get in there with a boat that size.

As far as the actual marina goes, I’m not sure. I know some people that pull larger cruisers in there to stop for a few hours, but don’t want to steer you wrong.

Your best bet is to simply call.

If you’re interested, Pepin has a few other viable options for food right near by. The Harbor View has hands down the best food in that area, but entres are more spendy. For wings or a pizza the Garden Pub is a great option and they’ll even pick you up for free from the marina in their stretch golf cart. Obviously the Pickle is right there as well. Perhaps you will just have to bring the yacht down for multiple outings in that area?!?

    Alma Marina Great river houseboats.

Conditions are looking similar to those in 1993.River in Trempealeau has been above action stage since March 16,so it is probably a record for here.More rain coming tomorrow night, and the show goes on.

The dock at Roschen was shoved across the landing sideways by the rising water and strong winds this morning as of ~8:30am. With rising water, I’d assume they wouldn’t waste the energy doing anything but pulling the dock and probably closing the landing?
