How do you manage your waypoints???

I was going over the boat tonight to make sure everything is working and when I fired up the HDS’s I noticed 100+ waypoints on a local lake a few blocks away. This got me thinking about how I could manage my waypoints better. When I’m fishing I dont take the time to mark if its a weed edge, rocks, timber, etc. I just put a dot with a number. Now many months later I dont remember what every “dot” represents. I’m wondering how other people keep track of there waypoints and if its worth taking the extra time to type in the info everytime I mark a waypoint.

If you have a HumminBird you can use the HumminBird PC program which use Google Maps to show you the location of the way points. Then you can rename them so they make sense. You can also create groups to categorize them best for you.

The most difficult part is to be disciplined on time to do it. I run H/bird and use the H/bird PC. For me, its in the icons. I rename them to clean up the lists I have. but use the icons for random markings, structure, navigation, and so on. Pretty easy to make a system that is way too complex

I manage mine pretty much exactly the same way! Although, I have to admit it’s not a great system… doah

Get one of those write in the rain notebooks and keep it on your dashboard. When I catch fish or mark a quick waypoint, I just remember to put a quick note about it, then when I get in I go back to those way points and input my information. I also move it over to my fishing journal at the end of the trip. That way, I got two places I can track it. Its a lot of work, but has been very successful for me. The journal is nice because I can go back and find that information fast on my computer. I had one time where I lost all my waypoints and because of the journal notes I almost got them all back. The Hbird PC sounds like a very cool tool to use.

I use a system with different icons. I use one icon for a Muskie follow, one for a Walleye catch and one for just good looking stuff to check out later. It’s quick and easy and I never forget what all those marks are for. Go to town, icons are free!

I don’t manage them. Each year i start with an empty card.

ON Birds, each waypoint saved has a picture attached to it – that is of the screen at the time the waypoint button was pushed.
I can easily hover over a waypoint and quickly realize why i hit the button.

I have a old x26 lowrance, the old lcx units have waypoints and icons. Waypoints can be deleted and icons can’t. So I put down icons to mark rocks, timber, or anything that will always be there. I use waypoints to mark things like musky follows, walleyes caught while trolling a reef or flat. I do this so I can delete the waypoint if need be after fishing a area or lake. The new units only have icons so I use certain icons to mark rocks, timber, and alike, and certain icons to mark musky follows, fish caught on a trolling pass. You have to decide what icons you want to use for each.
