How do you coordinate using a minn kota foot pedal with the remote

I just started using my ulterra i-pilot link. For an older guy this is becoming a steep learning curve. I know time on the water will help but a little boost from some kind hearted soul would really help. I’m thinking that leaving the foot pedal on either “normal or ulterra mode” and using the remote for picking up the rest of the other functions.

    Thanx, Bob

For me it’s a either or thing.
I run a tiller and do everything with the fob from the back. My foot pedal lays in the storage compartment as a back-up if something happens to the fob.

I’ll be interested to read other responses.

I use remote 95% of the time.
foot pedal, if I do sit in the bow casting, and that’s not much.

Bass guys pretty much grew up with cable drives to munch through vegetation and those were always operated by foot.

Most walleye guys with bow mounted electric steer trolling motors used them to follow off shore contours while trolling. About the time these motors added many more features like follow the contour, record a track, spot-lock, etc. the remotes were upgraded so they can perform many more options than a standard foot pedal can.

Now trolling motors like an Ultrex combine all the above. I still munch weeds for green carp but now with a remote!

So it kind of depends on what you grew up with and what you prefer, most guys get comfortable with foot or remote and kind of stay there depending on their style of fishing.

I’m with most on the guys. The foot pedal is backup for me in case the remote would have an issue. I rarely pull it out if I do some bow casting. I’d get comfortable with the remote and then try the pedal.

Most of the functions are on the remote, especially if you’re a walleye guy and using the contour functions.

On my new boat I have an Ulterra and use the remote. Foot pedal is in a storage compartment. On my old boat the last motor I had was a Terrova and I used the remote and foot pedal was in a storage compartment. Before that I had an auto pilot that only had a foot pedal and I ran that mostly by hand. It’s hard to adjust speed with the foot pedal.

That is one of many reasons I started this topic.

I will use the foot pedal when fishing bass: working docks or flipping seedbeds. For walleye fishing it has been only the remote.

I 100% use the foot pedal because I need both hands to fish.

I’m looking for a “both” and not an “either or”.

I am a walleye fisherman and am on the bow most of the time 98% of the time. I can use 2 poles and they are usually in my hands. Remote is around my neck and foot pedal at my feet to use primarily for steering.

I have a Terrova, not Ulterra, so I don’t know what “normal or ulterra mode” is. I use the remote for trolling, and the foot pedal for casting. When casting, having to take one hand off the fishing rod to steer or change speed with the remote is clumsy for me. Much easier to continue cranking the reel and navigating with the foot pedal. The big change in that recently is “follow the contour”. Then there’s no need to use the foot pedal, but if you’re casting shoreline where you have to steer around docks, timber, rocks the foot pedal is best.

I also have a Terrova, but I will set my remote for the speed I want hit the N button to hold me on the course I want then use the foot pedal to adjust direction as needed. I have used this both for casting and trolling.
