Drivers Ed in Mankato.
We were taught using two feet – left was the brake, right was the gas
Farm kid driving tractors. Mostly a 70 JD and a 460 IH. My first truck driving experience was my uncle getting his truck stuck in the pasture. He saw me out shooting rabbits and said “Can you drive?” I was 10. He backed it up to his stuck truck and hooked up the tow strap. A quick lesson on what each peddle did and I was fully trained.
Fast forward to turning 16. Dad said he’d pay my insurance right up until I got my first ticket. I lasted 6 hours.
Me and my dad were out hunting some private land and told me to go get the old 74 K5 Blazer and drive it up to where we ended after hunting, think I was 11. Man I miss that truck, what a beast. Also when I got my permit at 15 we took a trip to Seattle and I drove most of the way in an 1989 Suburban, by the time it came to drivers ed, he would just have me drive to where he wanted to two other kids to learn, since they were terrible and it was not safe to have them driving around others on the freeway. And parallel parking I aced three times and he sent me home while he worked on the others, think I was there for 15 minutes and had to call for a ride home.
I started driving a vehicle when I was about 12 or 13… A manual 5 speed Dodge D50 (made by Mitsubishi) when we would cut wood, I would drive it a few yards at a time, to load the wood…after it was loaded, I would drive the truck back to the house a couple miles and unload it and bring it back… I could load that thing fast… the more I hauled, the more I got to drive !!! Got really good at stick shift, you had to be to start off with a full load on that little truck !!!
I wouldnt drive with my dad, so I took my mom. It was an 84 2wd 4spd manual s10. I got to a 4 way stop and it took me like 10 minutes to get through the intersection because I kept killing it.
South Eastern MN. Trout fishing and gravel roads. I was about 12. My dad would let me drive his truck, manual transmission. We got bolder and he let me drive into town (Spring Valley) and one time we pulled into the A&W. There was a police car also having lunch but we just played it cool and carried on.

My first vehicle was a brand spanking new 1979 D-50.
When it finally died and head over 200,000 miles on it
drove a 8N Ford “pulling hay up in barn” Probably around 8 or 9 years old. Bought my first car in 1974 when I was 14, a 69 Camaro. Use to drive it on the back roads checking traps. Wish I had that car back!
