Just read a news alert that 21 vehicles have been stolen in Woodbury from 7/30 – 8/9. They talk about securing your car and to be on the lookout but they don’t say how they are being stolen other than someone entering the car. I was under the impression that modern cars cant be “hot wired”. Can someone enlighten me on how newer vehicles are being started and able to be driven?

Most modern automobiles have a proximity start, and just like any other electronic device, it can be hacked by someone that knows what they are doing.
I’m sure there are some people who have left their vehicles unlocked too, maybe even with the keys inside…
August 11, 2021 at 8:25 am #2053950I saw a stat regarding that the other day that 60% of them have the keys in them.
With proximity start, it is easy to do. I know I sometimes just throw the keys in the cupholder and forget about them.

I use to work auto theft claims and 95% of the time a key is left in the vehicle, or vehicle is left running. It takes some very expensive equipment to beat modern ignitions, but if there car theft ring running around they may have it.
August 11, 2021 at 8:30 am #2053953People are leaving their doors open with their keys in them. Thefts are up all over the metro and 95% of them are people leaving their cars or garages unsecured. Not very bright…..It’s not the 50s anymore people.

The other big no no is garage door openers in the vehicles. Quick easy way to let a robber inside.
I’m guilty of leaving keys in my ignition alot of times at home. Never had a issue but a while back i started making sure they were pulled out.August 11, 2021 at 9:09 am #2053961That makes sense and makes me feel better. I never leave my keys in the car. Thanks guys.

I’m guilty of leaving keys in my ignition alot of times at home. Never had a issue but a while back i started making sure they were pulled out.Never thought of this….my truck is in the driveway locked and I never leave anything valuable but I do leave the opener. We have a detached garage so if someone did get into the truck they could open the garage and I might never here it.
Walking outside now to grab it……
August 11, 2021 at 9:44 am #2053969wait until winter when people leave their cars running to run in to a gas station. couldn’t be any easier than that
August 11, 2021 at 9:45 am #2053970They had a video of a truck getting stolen from a Marathon gas station in Hudson this week. Guy left keys in the truck. Not sure if it was running. Video shows the guy walk in to pay. A car pulled up seconds later. 1 guy got out and jumped in truck and both vehicles took off if different directions. Whole thing took less than 30 seconds. I do always take my keys out when going into the station. I despise thieves.
August 11, 2021 at 9:50 am #2053971They all had keys left in the vehicles.
I don’t get this?
I ALWAYS take my keys when I shut my truck off, wherever I am. I’m too afraid of the doors automatically locking somehow (with my keys inside).

That problem doesn’t exist if you drive a Ford because there is a keypad.
fishmantimPosts: 143August 11, 2021 at 10:42 am #2053989The criminals are definitely at work since the “Defund Police Movement” and they are not going to hang around areas where there is no prey..be smart people, lock your car no matter what, don’t have anything of value exposed for the “Car Shoppers”..criminals don’t waste their time on stuff that takes to much time or brains to steal..its almost always targets of opportunity.
August 11, 2021 at 10:49 am #2053991I would not automatically assume all of these car owners did NOT want their car stolen….

I lock my truck when I am just going into the gas station and parked right out front with only a vehicle or two in the lot.
My wife’s vehicle someone got into it one night in our driveway. Stole a check and forged my signature. Sucker was caught when they found him passed out in a gas station bathroom snoring a few weeks later with a band around his elbow and needle sticking out of his arm.JensenPosts: 461August 11, 2021 at 12:39 pm #2054024Just read this and mentioned it to my contractor doing work on my house and he said about 3 weeks ago his friend went into the gas station with his wife that just got out of hospital after giving birth to there first kid was sleeping in the back when someone jumped and took off. This douchbag was arrested.

August 11, 2021 at 3:16 pm #2054064Every night before bed i have a ritual where i go around the house and make sure every door and window is locked, the garage door is closed, the alarm is turned on and both of our cars are locked. My wife is notorious for not locking her car doors and our only garage door opener is in her car. The main reason i lock her car is not to prevent theft its to prevent the garage door from being taken and used later on when we are not home

They’re taking garage doors in Mound now? It’s the end times for sure.
hndPosts: 1579August 11, 2021 at 3:53 pm #2054075I play softball with a handful of police officers. 95% of cars stolen have the keys in them. they said almost 100% of cars “broken into” are not locked. nobody is breaking windows or pulling cylinders.
stevenoakPosts: 1719August 11, 2021 at 7:27 pm #2054105Talking to a police officer at church last week. They caught 3 car thieves 2 days before One was 13, the other 2 were 10 years old. They were released to their parents. Pretty much case closed. Also, if a stolen car exceeded the speed limit. They are not allowed to pursue. Back in the day, a car would be dumped in half an hour. They found a guy driving a car he took 3 days before. Think even the ones caught are walking.
JasonPosts: 804August 11, 2021 at 9:36 pm #2054129I am guilty of leaving my keys in the truck and using the keypad to get in. I lock it with either the keypad or my phone.
If I didn’t have an $85 monthly insurance payment I might be more concerned… maybe if I happen to catch them in the act a loud bang will go off!
It’s also pretty easy to track a newer Fords whereabouts with the FordPass app as well.August 11, 2021 at 9:36 pm #2054130Newer vehicles with proximity, shouldn’t lock with the keys left in them… I have tried it many times and the horn honks and they won’t lock. It is possible to do it, but it wouldn’t be by mistake.. and even then if you did that somehow, with the new ones, you can remotely unlock them with your phone.

No need, it’s a Toyota
BrittmanPosts: 1948August 13, 2021 at 6:45 am #2054403Many, many people do not lock their car and truck doors. Kids walk the streets between midnight at 5AM. They lift door handles and if one opens they scavange the glove box and cubbies for cash. Plenty of people leave cash stashes …
Side note is garage door openers. Primary access into people’s garages and even their homes is the garage door opener left in an unlocked vehicle.
We run our garage door off our phone app.
