Has anyone gone up to LOTW and stayed in one of the local Air BNB / hotels / resorts for the room only, then take personal portable out?

I am thinking about renting a cabin from Air BNB with a few friends then taking the portables out.

    Good Idea?
    Bad Idea?
    Experiences/ recommendation greatly appreciated.

I have done that a quite a few times from the Wheelers Point area. Have stayed at a few different hotels in town (Baudette) and a couple different resorts on Wheelers Point. In my experience the resorts are reluctant to rent lodging only when they are busy. I can understand their position, they generate a great deal more revenue with package deals. My preference would be to stay at one of the resorts if possible. Nice to have fish cleaning facilities and a bar/restaurant all in one location after a long day on the ice.

Most frequently I have fished off of Adrian’s Road but have also used Morris Point, Cyrus, Zippel Bay and even over to Babblers on one occasion. We have only ever had a 4 wheel drive pick up for transportation so sometimes getting a decent spot off the main road can be an issue when there is a lot of snow but there are a great number of side roads plowed off of the main road so we have always been able to come up with something.

Get as much information as you can before going. What baits are currently working best and what depths. If you have to fish in the crowd try to be on the outer edge. Each trip is a learning experience but it is a blast every time.

I see a lot of rigs in the hotel parking lots in Warroad with portables in them. Several options to get out on plowed roads. We do have a good snow cover on the lake and the wind blew most of the day and the snow was drifting pretty good. I’d recommend that you stick to roads with a truck.
