Hot meals ice fishing

What are your go to hot meals ice fishing? To clarify, I’m talking cooking over a buddy heater, not a fancy full kitchen in an ice castle. When you’re spending all day on the ice, nothing beats a hot meal. I’ve got a couple but looking for more ideas.

For breakfast, I premake a sausage egg cheese sandwhich on English muffins and wrap in tin foil to heat on the buddy heater. For lunch, I like to do a tortilla, pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese and pepperonis. Wrap in foil and heat on the buddy heater.

I also frequently bring the jet boil out and boil water to add to dehydrated meals. My go to meals to make in the dehydrator are spaghetti and beef stroganoff.

Anyone else have any similar meals they make that they can share?

If we have multiple trucks going we bring a small grill for burger and brats.

Chilli brats dogs soup grilled cheese hot ham and cheese pizza.
    Any kind of leftovers.

Most times it’s jerky and seeds. I found out I can live a while on jerky and seeds. jester

When we fish in Canada we basically fish off our sleds. We boil water on the stove in the morning before we leave put it in a thermos and fill it with homemade suasages hotdogs, kielbasa, etc.

That’s a great idea. We also fish off of our sleds in Canada. On that trip I usually bring a thermos of hot bone broth or soup. I’m going to add the sausage to the mix. Some of the guys bring aluminum foil, butter, and seasoning and will make a fire and cook trout for lunch.

When fishing in a shack, I’ve warmed up premade breakfast burritos before. If someone has the old sunflower heater, we’ll boil water and make brats and hotdogs.

Other than that, I basically make my own trail mix of primary different nuts.

Venison or goose smoked polish. Goose cheese burgers. Marinated duck, goose or venison. If we are doing dinner I’ll do a foil pack full of carrots, taters and peppers. Various forms of hot breakfast or lunch sandwiches in foil. I love cooking on the ice.

Hobo dinners, diced potatoes, carrots, a single 1/4 lbs beef patties, lots of sliced butter placed throughout, seasonings and then double wrapped (sealed) in foil. Tear the end open and eat out of the foil, but dumping onto a plate works better. About 15-20min per side.

I like to pre-prepare Polska Kielbasa and sliced onions and colored peppers. They heat up fast on Mr. Buddy and warm the soul.

The Mr Heater, Heater/cooker works well for this. Then you can heat up anything you can fit in a pan on top of it. Soup, sausages anything. Smoked sausages from Sam’s with kraut would be awesome. I just eat Kwik Trip cold sandwiches.

Do you guys make your own rack to attach to the Buddy heater. I just got a new Buddy heater and was thinking about getting a baking rack and cutting/bending it to make it easy to attach to the grate on the heater.

I do precooked-homemade breakfast burritos wrapped in foil for breakfast, then make turkey/ham/cheese sandwiches wrapped in foil for lunch. I paid like $30 for one of those Lakco trays specific to the buddy heater years ago and it’s paid for itself 10-20 times over already. I’ve seen lots of other ways to cook on buddy’s, but these trays are simple and worth it to me.

Look up the wood stove fan attachment on Amazon. You get get one for the buddy heater for like 9 bucks. It’s a perfect cook top for food in foils. Most days I just throw my food right on top of my heat hog.

I don’t often cook on the ice, but when I do it’s because I outlasted a fishing partner who has succumbed to the ole hypothermia bug. After that — because I am resourceful — I’ll usually resort to grilled gastrocnemius or bicep burgers. Some call it sick, I call it MRE(mate ready to eat). Gotta do what you gotta do.

I was looking at the other day and was debating on getting it. Is it sturdy enough to put a small pot or soup can on it?

Some people use a paint roller rack (found in paint dept at menards and such)
I used a wire shelving rack and cut/bent. They are a bit heavier duty and can be found in shelving dept at menards and such.

Home Depot 1 gal Paint rack $4 They also make a 3 gal rack that fits the Big Buddy $6. No mods needed flip upside down and it hooks on the handle. I just bought one of each last week.

My buddy brought his 22″ Blackstone last year to LOTW, cooked every meal on there. Steaks to breakfast burritos, strongly recommend especially if you’re taking the truck out.

I had poor luck with the flipped over grates and paint racks when trying to warm a can of chunky soup or the like. The lakeco piece is very sturdy. *Not affiliated in anyway )

Someone mentioned it above but thermos dogs are where it’s at. With a good thermos the water will stay piping hot all day.

Boil them up for a few minutes in the morning and dump it all in a thermos.

Same for us fishing off sleds, but I bring a big batch of vac-seeled chili or jambalaya every day. Takes 20 minutes to re-heat and we have hot lunch for 12 guys.

Yep, I used the paint rack idea on both my regular buddy heater as well as my big buddy heater. Bent the the attachment arms slightly to fit. To stabilize it further is used some small chain (like you may see used on a hanging planter) and attached this chain from the front leading edge of the paint rack down to a section of the front wire grid on the heater.

I am pretty happy with brats/hot dogs, coffee or pre-made breakfast wraps.
