Hot bite…but…

Sunday 8/29/21, I got into a hot bite on pool 5.

Actually, one of the hotter bites I think I may have ever experienced.
Not much happened from 8 to 10AM, then the sun broke through the rain clouds and it was on!

I pulled dozens of walleye/sauger in just a few hours.

The wind picked up as the clouds dispersed; between controlling the boat, tending both rods, and pulling weeds off, I couldn’t keep up and had to go to one line.

ALL of the eyes and sauger were shorts. I only pulled one eater and it was only a 16″ fish?!

I tried zig zagging to deeper and shallower, thinking that the bigger fish had to be close. Nothing. The bite was only happening at 14′, and only dinks?!

Seems like everything is running about a month ahead of normal? Tons of weeds are floating in large mats.

Another cloud bank moved in and just like they had started with the sun, the bite ended with the cloud cover.
    Like throwing a light switch!

I’ve not experienced anything like this before and don’t understand. The sun impacting the bite that sudden and intense?
    Where were the larger fish?

I don’t have very much experience on the river, but I know Jame’s always talked about needing sun for a good bite!

Were you marking bait? My guess is a pod found a good food source and as the weather changed that bait moved.

I like sun and wind on the river….good sunshine and medium wind to break up the surface always tends to get them charged up.

Not sure where the big fish are….they have been tight lipped lately on P2.

Sounds like what we find on the upper end of P2 sometimes. Pods of small males that you can lay the smack down on when you find them. Then they move for some reason….might be flow, sun, bait, etc.

The river changes everyday….sounds like you had better luck than most this summer on the river!

It’s been an odd and challenging year on the river, and that’s all I know.

Seems like it changes by the hour…most days.
