Just wondering what you guys use for replacement hooks for your flicker shads in size 5 and 7? Wanna make sure I have plenty of extras in the boat because those darn snakes do a number to those light wire hooks!

Size 8 Mustad Ultra Point Treble Hooks (#5 Flicker Shad)
Size 6 Mustad Ultra Point Treble Hooks (#7 Flicker Shad)
It’s usually the fisherman with the pliers that destroys the hooks and not the fish unless drags are set waaaaaaay tight.
I’ve always thought that the hooks on Flicker Shads are too light as well and have replaced many that have gotten bent completely out of shape from walleyes and the occasional northern. It’s rare that I have to do this on the Rapalas, Salmos, Reef Runners, Lindys, Walleye Divers or Storm crankbaits that I also routinely fish with. If I’m destroying the Flicker Shad hooks with pliers or have my drags set too tightly, it’s odd to me that the hooks on other brands of crankbaits seem unaffected.
The Flicker Shads do catch fish though and I use them a lot, even though in addition to the hooks, they require constant tuning much like Reef Runners.
It usually happens when they get in the net and go crazy. Or also when removing from their bony mouth. Not gonna lie I have bent a few with pliers but still wanna have extras in the boat with me.
the lure works great. Too bad they are junk though. Our fishing group has a pile of broken ones hanging in “the shack” where we stay in ND. We call it the wall of shame. They catch more fish than shad raps, but you also lose more fish then you do with shad raps. A net will demolish them, especially with a pike.
At least Mill’s Fleet runs good sales on the 3 packs!
Put a sureset hook on the rear. You wont regret it. Hooking percentage will go way up. You need to buy a smaller size than you would normally think, but I cannot remember what number it is off the top of my head.
Ryan,
If you send your broken Flicker Shad back to Berkley, they will replace them. Just include a quick letter for the damaged lure asking for a replacement for product defect. I sent two in this past winter, one the dive bill was broke off and the other the rear hook was pulled out. both lures were replaced. however they can only replace standard color lures, if the lure was a fleet farm exclusive like one of mine, they gave me the option of my color of choice. Most all lure companies will replace damaged lures from my experiences so far.
Mustad triple grips in size 6 is what comes on the flicker shad. They are thin wire, but they hook up and stay hooked very well. I just bought a pack of replacements last night.
I have been running flicker shads for years every weekend in the summer and have yet to break one. Never even heard of one breaking until now.
Has anyone found a store that carried black triple grips? I have only found nickel.

2 years as my primary trolling crank and I have yet to break one or bend the hooks. Was just talking last night with my fishing partner about how sticky the hooks are on flickers.

Fleet farm in Hudson, WI had red and black last week when I was there. I got the red.
