This morning went down to the lake to check out how wet it was. Was thinking how rarely see a homemade portable nowadays. due to the cost of manufactured ones and mobile ice techniques. Thinking of it brought back some good memories as a kid in the home made one my dad had when I was young. wood floor with blue tarp didn’t have a door but somehow it worked. anyone have any cool creations back in the day? no offense if someones still using one. side note father in law has one in shed used it 5 years ago froze our butts off he retarped it after hasn’t seen the ice since. Mother in law occasionally brings up it taking up space but he won’t part with it. always amused when it comes up when for it to make another appearance.

The blue tarp with plywood floor and ends was one of my first shop projects in high school. I bet I made 10 of those things in my lifetime. You could knock one out in about two nights after school. Many good memories with grandpa in these fishhouses. Him telling me not to get to close to the sunflower heater, using the dowel stick rods and the smell of him smoking swisher sweets. Things were simpler back then and there was nothing wrong with that. We caught fish without the vexilar, floating suits and the thermal flipovers. Just some snowboots you could only buy at the local grain elevator and a pair of carhartt bibs. LOL

Love the old time stories. I am a product of the new age of technology, but I long for days gone past

Wow, the old blue tarp shelters, been many years since I used one. I remember dragging that thing through the snow and then using the hand auger to open some holes. By the time you got set up it was time for a nap because you were beat.

My dad made one and used it many years. one day my mom decided she wanted a greenhouse so he threw a section of clear plastic onto the tarp and boom mom had her greenhouse!

Just the other day my daughter chuckled and said “how did you ever do it”….as she pointed to one of those little blue tarp fish house from our wheel house. Some great memories from those fish houses.

We fished with or kids in a Clam suitcase and a sunflower heater. Jig sticks only added to the fun.

I still use the plywood and blue tarp shack when I’m out. It has ski’s on the bottom to pull easier though. Most times I’m hole hopping though being I have an ice suit. But yeah don’t see a whole lot of home made ones anymore.
