So I’ve been eyeing up a DeWalt battery powered fan for the boat, and saw that Home Depot has them on sale for $99 and some in stock at the closest store.

I ran in and grabbed one, it rang up as $129+ tax

I showed the clerk and her manager the store’s page, 6 in stock….for $99

She said they can’t price match what they list online for their store, but can price match competitors??? smash

A 10 second Google search showed Lowe’s selling them for $99, so all is well and good….but WTF? I’ve never liked Home Depot to begin with, and they iced the cake for me today.

Its the training of the workers, I have ran into that problem before also and at the same store they price match plus 10%. I bet you did not get the 10% price match also?

That seams pretty silly that they will price match the competition but not themselves.

They try and push their online purchasing, I’m sure they offered for you to buy it in store and have it shipped or picked up. Can typically just grab it and go.

Is it annoying, yes, but if a store wants to save me $30 by putting something on sale online only I’ll take 5 minutes to jump thru a small hoop. 60min÷5, x30, is $360hr. Yup, worth it.

I would have left and told them I was going to buy one from Lowe’s.

I have had them price match their online price 3 times before with no problems. It is silly that the price is different.

Went through this with buying modular closet parts recently. Home Depot Online is a separate “entity” so to speak versus in-store. yes it’s stupid, but in my experience inside the large corporate world it checks out. Think of their online warehouse as a separate store entirely and go into it with low expectations.

Don’t even get me started on Home Cheap-o! When I did my bathroom reno over the winter, I had picked out some shiplap that was various shades of gray. Turns out it’s imported from SE Asia – I had no idea we’d need import a basic lumber product from overseas. Quality/integrity was fine but they sourced it from different suppliers and the count of Sq. ft. per box listed online was different from the supplier they got it from – and it ships direct from manufacturer. Turns out the HD website and the info from whatever the suppliers package it did not match- So when I went to pick it up after a two week lead time, I got essentially half of what I needed.

So I went in to the store, pulled up my order on my phone, showed them their own website and explained my ordeal. They said they’d fix it but I’d have to wait two weeks for it to arrive. I was already committed so bit my lip and said fine.

Two weeks later I get the notice my stuff is in. I go to pick it up and I once again get half of the original half I was owed (due to the same packaging error that was never fixed online). So I go back in the store and am now irate but the manager on duty was different than the one I dealt with before so we had to go through the ENTIRE process again. I couldn’t walk away, I already had the first half on my wall. So I had to wait another two weeks.

I go back in again 2 weeks later and actually get MORE than what I need but a different box qty. Manager said it was not extra cost – Well how benevolent of you Home Depot! How about you refund me half my original price for 6 weeks of BS rather than “gift” me more product than I need that I now need to get rid of.

Gets worse – I get home and open up the box and it’s essentially the same stuff but sourced from a different supplier – so the three dark/medium/light shades don’t exactly match the first two shipments. It’s VERY subtle and I was sick of the run around so I just went with it. No one notices until I point it out to them but I notice and it bugs me – mainly because it’s a reminder of the PITA is was to get it to finished and it doesn’t even match. We now call it our 50 Shades of Gray bathroom.

My one big conflict is that I’m a big Ryobi fan. So the only time I go into Home Depot now is to LOOK at any 18V 1+ tools I might need, then I order them on Amazon, usually while I’m still in the store. I wish other Brick & Mortar retailers sold Ryobi.

UGH – sorry for the rant. Just re-lived that stupid nightmare.

Price matches and sales at HD are store and manager dependant. Some will price match and some won’t. Go to a different one and you may find a completely different experience.

I was also going to post about the 11% rebate, nice job HRG! It’s also much easier to do than Menards as it’s all online.

Can’t price match themselves but they can price match their competitor?
    Just plain silly.

It’s like when I went to DQ in Elk River and ordered a #4 Reeses blizzard. She said we don’t have #4 blizzards the biggest we have is #3. So I say give me a quart (#4 size) of ice cream. She says do you want me to put some Reeses pieces in it and mix it up?
    I said “wouldn’t that be a #4 blizzard?”

Ya can’t make this stuff up.

Why would you want to go there, pay for it and then have it shipped or go back to pick it up. That’s the dumbest thing I’ve heard. Unless it’s out of stock. Now if it’s on the shelf I want it at the price they have it advertised for. Or I’ll go through the competition across the street and have them price match. 2 trips for 1 product isn’t saving much time or money when it’s on their shelf

Last year when purchasing the decking for my deck I figured it would be easier to just purchase it online. Made the purchase and tried to get the 11% rebate, realized they don’t honor the rebate for online purchases. On a $12k purchase thats a chunk ‘o change. So canceled that and went in-store. After making the exact same order the price came out to $10k plus the 11% rebate. So because of their not wanting to honor the rebate for online orders they lost even more money.

Amazing sometimes how their website doesn’t always represent the in-store prices.

That’s what the pic attached eludes to.

Buy it online for immediate store pickup. Stupid yes, small hoop to jump at store to buy online and pickup then and there yes, but saves time from driving to another store and price matching etc etc.

Lots of fishing stores like there are many construction box stores, some are good at some things and bad at others. Figure those out and utilize them for what they are instead of wishing of what they can be.

Just my 2 cents. Cheers fellas. toast

As a retired contractor HD is good for on thing……those little “oh shoot” moments when you need a little some thing. Their lumber is junk compared to a real lumber yard and it’s more expensive.

I was mistaken, I didn’t know you could do immediate pick up. I was picturing waiting for it to arrive. And then driving back.

Many items are available for immediate pickup. However I’ve ran into times when they have it in stock at the store yet immediate pickup is not available, that’s when you go with ship to home since it’s typically free and only takes a couple days, unlike ship to store which takes at least a week.

Most everything I buy at HD and Mills in online, pick up in store / yard. You get the on-line price and any “fire-sale” daily discount. Mills floats 10% and 12% discounts on-line all the time.

Menards is trickier in that they will charge you extra for some on-line pick ups … but lumber you can buy on-line and customer picks … (see below).

Mills even lets you buy mulch on-line, pull up in the yard and the fork lift comes over with the pallet and lifts it to truck bed level.

Pretty much the only thing I do not buy on-line and pick up is lumber. I am pretty particular and like to sort those stacks. I guess most sporting goods I go in and pick out myself … but that last auger and Vex I purchased on-line … boxes ready when I pulled up.
