Ok so the Riot post got me to thinking. Primarily for home defense and lets just add in Riot control what would you prefer to own or purchase ? a Tactical Shotgun like say a Beretta 1301 or a Benelli M4 or a Modern Sporting rifle such as a AR platform rifle. I believe that a Tactical shotgun is the much better choice. Given that you can load it with either Buckshot in various sizes or with slugs I just think it is the better choice. I know it does not have the range that a AR would or not near as much Capacity, but I don’t think either of them are factors in a home defense or riot situation. The only reason why I would lean more towards the AR is because of the two I believe more restrictions are coming sooner on the AR. What are your thoughts on the better choice.

AR shotgun of course! If it’s strictly home defense, then a shotgun would be my choice.

Well since there are now AR shotguns that may be the best option. Cost is a bit high at this point but I’m sure that will come down as more players enter the market.

I agree

Although bird shot would get the job done. It just would not have the stopping power I would want. I’m not even sure how Far it would penetrate on a large person or one wearing heavy cloths.
August 2, 2023 at 2:46 pm #2217195A shotgun is better. Unless you have experience shooting at people you or whomever is trying to protect the home, is going to be extremely scared, nervous etc. If you are shaking because you are scared, which you will be, a shotgun is a lot easier not to miss. My 2 cents.
August 2, 2023 at 2:49 pm #2217196I keep a 45 in my night stand, an 870 loaded with #4 buckshot behind the bedroom door, and an AR in the closet. I figure why not
August 2, 2023 at 2:51 pm #2217197My vote is for an English broadsword. Nothing would get intruders out of your home faster than Aragorn bounding down the hallway ready to cleave you in two.
In all reality, I’ll take my full size 9mm with a light over any AR or shotgun. The longer the barrel, the harder CQB is. I can pie off a corner in my home much easier with my Canik than I can with a 16″ AR or 18″ shotgun. And unless you have a suppressor and/or ear pro, both the shooter and shootee are going to have a bad time when you touch that AR off.

Ha. The first lesson they teach you in zombie apocalypse training is that “blades don’t need reloading.”

They also teach you to never bring a knife or a broadsword to a gun fight.

What are the 3 rules of Zombieland?
Zombieland Rules | Zombieland Wiki | Fandom
The rules. #1: Cardio – When the virus struck, for obvious reasons, the first ones to go were the fatties. #2: Double Tap – In those moments when you’re not sure the undead are really dead dead, don’t get all stingy with your bullets. #3: Beware of Bathrooms – Don’t let them catch you with your pants down.DeucesPosts: 5236August 2, 2023 at 3:31 pm #2217207My vote is for an English broadsword. This is a gem of a reply!
Never underestimate the value of a good baseball bat either and those don’t need to be reloaded.

Better hope you can swing fast and hard before they get in close quarters, a bat would be virtually useless. You also better have one hell of a good swing, which would be impossible in a hallway, bathroom or corner. Never depend on close combat when a intruder has harmful intentions

If they’re inside my home then they are already in close quarters. I don’t live in a mansion. There’s still plenty of room to swing a bat if the situation gets to that point. I’m definitely not saying only rely on a bat for home defense. A bat is just good to have any in any arsenal of assorted guns and knives and other weapons.
RiverratPosts: 1524August 2, 2023 at 3:50 pm #2217213I hate Glocks, they are ugly, not that much fun to shoot, and just feel weird. But they work, most people understand how to operate them if the primary user is incapacitated, they hold lights well, and are reliable. Glock 19.
OG Net_ManPosts: 594August 2, 2023 at 4:14 pm #2217217Shotgun – keeps shells in the tube but none in the chamber. When required then chamber a round. Inside a house, the noise alone of a round being chambered will send them running.
August 2, 2023 at 4:35 pm #2217222Shotgun. If you nothing else, that big gaping hole is a heck of a deterrent.

castle-rock-clownPosts: 2596August 2, 2023 at 5:16 pm #2217228On the FD I’ve seen some pretty terrifying dogs run for the hills when police arrived on scene and spritzed them with just a little pepper spray. Now how would you handle a situation if the bad guy(s) are holding a loved one as a human shield?

Timeout Mr. Bad Guy….I need to change out the bay for something else in the arsenal.
Any weapon that needs to swung in an arc is bad for home defense…bat, shotgun, rifle, etc. They are too slow and can get hung up on doorways, walls, etc.
Option 1 for home defense is gtfo to someplace safe and call the cops. Option 2 is use force with a handgun.
I honestly think that big and loud dogs are the best deterrent. If you are that worried about it, get a dog with a menacing bark and growl.

I hope nothing like this happens to any one but you hope the dog is loud enough to deter any form of a b&e, but if they enter and it’s a self defense situation, I only hope my German shepherd can slow some one down so I would have time to react. My dogs a old girl now days and I’m sure she can be overpowered if some one really wanted. As far as home defense I would take my glock 17 over any long gun
DeucesPosts: 5236August 2, 2023 at 10:03 pm #2217263To the OP what exactly is riot control? Honestly wtf r u expecting to do, cap off a dozen libby teens wanting to take down your trump flag or what? Serious question.
And to anyone who is super cereal about this home defense stuff, why are we cheaping out to handguns and bats? If you are super cereal about your family why cut corners, why put your trust into some measly weapons, it is your family and your home afterall, is there a price you can put on that? Dogs get fed hotdogs w drugs all the time around here, can have the nastiest biggest beast ya want guarantee hes gonna shove an emulsified meat product down his throat fast it can.
If I took it seriously, which i dont, id go all the way. MP5 or an HK UMP with civilian grade bangers. Flash em before i knee cap em and get out the nylon cuffs. Probably be done making some fresh coffee for when the badges show

Yes but the dog is inside the house and would alert us long before a hot dog was thrown in. That’s what I depend on the dog for, alarm that it heard some one and I can get a few moments notice. For poison to be fed to the dog means a door or window would have to be open and our Sophie girl is on high alert all day long. If it happens all the time in north mpls that sounds like a terrible place. But also sounds like a dog must be left out side all Dat and night, that’s not the case at my home. But either way I just hope no one breaks in. I don’t want to deal with any of it.
As for riot control to the op, I guess we don’t prepare, we don’t do that and I’m no rittenhouse we don’t go look for trouble
