Aholes are aholes, no changing them. You either understand the original intent or you don’t. In which case you’re either just plain stupid or an ahole. I would have sat and drilled about 30 holes around his shack till he left.

Electric augers have really ruined the enjoyment of doing this. A one arm bandit with dull blades are great for this!

That is what my old man and I do. Have for a long time. Chisago lakes finest decoy move.

Ha! I knew I read that someone did that this winter.

It does urine me off when this happens but I don’t care enough to get into an argument about it, for two reasons. It won’t stop them from doing it again, and nothing good can come from it.

I also feel like I can find fish in other areas of lakes so I don’t get too butthurt by it.

From your pictures I know exactly where you are and fish there often this time of year. It was probably your buddy with Panoptix I saw out there last week while i was fishing. He moves a lot!

This is honestly how it goes in that bay. People do not care and will fish right out of your holes. I don’t know what it is about that spot.

I seem to remember someone posting this winter that they parked their permanent shack in a spot as a “decoy” and then went to fish somewhere else in their portable. The permanent shack had people all around it after a period of time.

New product idea: A giant rubber crappie.

Drill a couple of holes, and then hoot, holler, and hold up the giant rubber crappie about every 3 minutes. Helps to have a buddy or two for some loud “Naaaaaaaace fish. Naaaaaaceee fish.” and high-fiving.

After about 10 minutes and one last “catch” of the fake crappie, you yell, “Yeeeeaaah baby! Frickin’ limited OUT aaaaa-gain. Peace out bros.” Load up and drive away.

Everybody on the lake will spend hours fishing where you just left. Coming soon to a store near you, the Super Slabba’. $129.95.

I’ve pulled this type of move in open water. When the afternoon anchor-monkeys set up shop on the break that I’ve been trolling, I go around them into no mans land, grab the net and dip it into the water, and then high-five my buddy. I do it every time I go past them. 50% of the time the anchor-monkeys move off the break to set up on my “hot-spot” and I get my trolling line back.

My favorite time of year is first ice and last ice. Nobody drives up on me. That time is almost here in central Minnesota.

I agree ZSG that was a rude and inconsiderate move by the guy.I would have been pi$$ed also.
I know it’s public water but a little common sense and courtesy, please.
I, much like you would have used my freedom of speech card and let him have it.
I think if your gear is around the hole it’s yours.

Basically did this with a walleye shaped boat bumper below the DBQ dam 1 year. Knew a local guy was watching bil and I. We weren’t catching anything and decided to head home. First we netted the boat bumper walleye 3 times. High fived each other and headed for the landing. Next week bil runs into the other local guy asks him how he did fishing. He got skunked but wanted to know what we were using. Told him we got skunked also. Called bil a liar. He saw us catch 4 or 5 nice walleyes. We laugh every time we fish below a dam.

I believe you have every right to be upset. To me, fishing real close after you catch some fish is STEALING hard earned information. Its also very sloppy lazy fishing. While the lake and I suppose the holes as well are public, the information is not public. I’m very clear when inviting a friend to a hot bite, that the information is not to be shared with others with out permission. The person with the information makes the rules on how its shared. I like to fish in a shelter so prying eyes cant see. If you fish an area too much, that too can entice others to fish there as well.

When your buddy saw him spying on you with binoculars that was the time to give him the moon. moon

I pee in to the wind at that point.
Not that he will see it. But I try

It’s a d bag move no doubt but it’s kinda like guys that cut into your trolling line on the river. I have plenty of spots to catch fish so I just move on. If you are that hard pressed to find your own fish then have it.

Or, just effing ask if you can fish by me. I usually could care less, especially if you have a cold stone or blue smoothie for me!

Unfortunately it’s a part of life on the ice now in most places. I’ve grown accustomed to it. It happens all the time here in SE Wisconsin. You get out before sunrise and within an hour of sunrise there’s 20+ shacks/people around you. On Poygan we have a skid house that we leave in the same spot all year as a dummy shack. This year I put double doors on. I bought a cheapie snowmobile from Craigslist that we kept inside. We would pull it out so it looked like someone was there. During the week it would work pretty good. Weekends, not so much since there’s a ton of people out there.

I will say though, some people who drill 100+ holes covering huge swathes of ice and think they own an entire area with 2 guys is ridiculous as well. That’s just being selfish and asking for problems. We usually only drill in small grids, if nothing we move and start a whole new grid. Those first holes as far as I’m concerned are now open to the public.

Just walk up to his truck and start cutting holes around it. It makes the message loud and clear. If they ask to fish I always let them but if you think you will push me out of a spot that’s not going to happen.

Two of my brothers were fishing a small lake near Emily out of his wheel house. They were the only guys on the lake. A guy showed up and drilled a hole between the bumper of the truck and the fish house. My brother went out of the house and asked the guy “what the hell do you think you are doing”. The guy said “it’s the best spot on the lake”. He had it GPSed. Can’t make it up.

This is so true. A friend of mine took me fall smallie fishing on GB one fall. Never see another boat in this spot. Usually good for 50 to 70 fish in a day. I have several friends that want me to take them there in the fall. No way would I take someone there and betray that spot for my friend that turned me onto the spot.

Pat I bet you have a few good stories. In fact does IDO have a bloopers or blunders episode on the cutting room floor. That would be fun to see.

That’s funny. Now if I ever see a walleye bumper, I’m totally going to have to buy it.

I will admit during open water fishing I have thought many times about tossing out a big orange marker and starting to work the area really hard like there was something there. Then slip away as soon as other boats show up and leave them thinking there must be something there because the guy who threw out the marker hasn’t picked it up yet.

In the Canadian sub-arctic, once way before everybody had GPS, I dropped one of those yellow markers everybody had on a rock pile that was producing pretty good. I then said to dad, “We’re gonna come back here tomorrow and somebody’s going to be fishing on top of our marker.” We had a good laugh because he said he was thinking the exact same thing even though there probably wasn’t another person within 50 miles.

I was fishing at the cabin a couple weeks ago. We had tipups out for the kids to chase and were jigging a few different holes. We had the dogs out there also running around with the kids. Whenever someone wanted to come over by us they saw the kids and dogs and went the other way, I didn’t have them out there to keep others away but it seemed to work. Next time take a couple Rotwielers and use that fence zone thing that keeps them within a certain distance, you should be fine then as long as the dogs don’t turn on you.

Wasn’t claiming all the holes that were drilled. But, I think I can claim the hole that I am fishing out of, and the 50 feet at least radius around it, especially when there is only ONE other fisherman out there.
Totally different story if there are 20+ people out there, or if it is on a crappie hole.. but these were fish roaming around the basin.

Unless you have a line in it, it ain’t your hole anymore…it sucks, but you don’t own any of that water. Now if someone moves in and drops a line in the very same hole your fishing, they better be wearing a bikini!

This whole stupi discusion would be avoided had the hole thief used a little curtesy and simply asked, ” hey do you mind if I fish some of these holes on the edge of your area”, ” if not I’ll leave”.
A little friendly courtesy goes a long way.

You know the 15 minutes of fame thing. You don’t have shoot anyone, Wwreck your car, drop your truck through the ice, or eat a Johnsonville to get on TV, facebook, or Instagram. Besides a guy just might catch a fish!! jester
