I know a number of people who do. It’s mostly because they travel a lot or they don’t like doing yard work or removing snow.

Not for me though. I do those things myself.

    Home Owners Association

They have specific rules in a neighborhood or complex and quite often they’ll mow the the grass and remove snow. You pay a monthly HOA fee for it.

This guy willingly bought into a community with HOA rules, then wants to biatch when he breaks the rules.

That is the only thing absurd here.

I agree, but you would know that buying your house, and if you disagreed, why would you even sign up?

In certain areas of the country it is tough NOT to belong to an HOA.
Many HOA’s just have guidelines on what you can and cannot do. Some of them have crazy restrictions some just have common sense guidelines.

Exactly. The HOA rules are very clear and obvious when you buy a house, townhouse, etc.

If you don’t like it, don’t buy. Look elsewhere. Not a difficult concept.

There’s lots of people that live somewhere that have them, as mxskeeter stated.

you don’t need an HOA to pay somebody to cut the grass or shovel the snow. HOA’s for single family homes are wrong and if i want the house, we can meet in court. If i pay the property taxes, you’re not going to tell me how to maintain my property. There are ordinances for that.

HOA requirements are typically laid out in deed covenants. Buy the property, buy into the HOA. If you want to end up in court I hope your pockets are deep. Better to just avoid them.

My brother lives in a townhouse with an HOA. He’s very happy to avoid snow removal and yard maintenance. Not my personal preference.

those deed covenants can, have been challenged and beaten. you are not bound eternally to somebody’s past wishes on property.

yep! My wife’s family down in Houston have this creeper that has a camera pointed at their pool and theyve complained about it but nothing. So they planted bamboo that grows higher than the fence and problem solved until an ice storm happens.

I think HOA’s are like workers’ unions in a way; they can either suck donkey lip or be awesome, but either way can be a huge cause of debate… right Glenn? cool

Like the previous poster stated, you should be made aware of the HOA at the time you are looking at the property. Rules of HOA should be made readily available – especially off of a web site. Look at the rules to see if any of these will be a problem for you.
The HOA I lived in mostly regulated detached accessory structures, above ground pools, and trailers parked on the driveway. Chain metal fences were also prohibited. Pretty basic limitations – nothing like color of paint on a home of flying a flag.
If you object to the rules, ask for a variance or get a petition signed to have the rule changed.
Violating one of the covenants could very well have consequences. Just my 2 cents.

I lived in a hoa for a very short time. I’ve never recieved so many tickets from a old lady that just despised me and the kids. Again I like the level of pettiness that this post originated from and I went to court after they tried coming at me for unpaid tickets. I fought the law and the law did not win. I spent more money going to court rather then paying the tickets. But it was totally worth it just to urine in the couple hoa big shots cereal. I also became the biggest complainer about snow removal in the hoa, they did not appreciate that but I sure did.

I think the guy is a giant PIA for his neighbors. He doesn’t get what he wants so he punishes his neighbors with the lights? My guess is there are other issues with him as well, I know I wouldn’t want a chicken coop in my next door neighbors back yard. Especially if it’s a neighborhood where the homes are close together. I live in development where our homes are on 3 acres so wouldn’t be a big deal here. OMG, mid typing and I just revisited the link and saw the chicken in the window! That’s priceless. Admittedly that’s my kind of sense of humor but still in the end I think he’s a PIA.

Whats wrong with chickens. Especially like most city limits to no roosters ? All my neighbors have chickens and never once have i thought to myself ” wow I hate those chicken, and the happiness it brings that family “.

Yeah as long as there are no roosters the hens are harmless. My wife taught Kindergarten years ago and they would raise chickens in class. They were told there would be no roosters, not sure how the heck they can tell but whatever. At the end of the year she took them all home and we setup a makeshift chicken coop in our yard and wouldnt you know it one was a damn rooster! It crowed exactly ONE TIME and then he was dinner.

When my wife and I bought our first house in the early 2000s we entered into and HOA – mainly because we were young and stupid, we just brushed it off, as it was only $30 month – our street was technically private so it was mainly for the upkeep of that. But there was a decorative neighborhood sign on a small sectioned-off corner that was jointly owned and we had to pay insurance on that as well. It was a started house neighborhood and the turnover was high. So we eventually banded together and voted as a neighborhood to get rid of it. But we had to petition the city to take over the street which was actually the easy part (Thankfully the sewer was up-to-spec, etc). Absolving the contract that NO ONE wanted to be part of anymore was the toughest. Unbelievable the legal hurdles we had to go through to get out of it.
