Along with the weights, don’t forget about the deceptive photos! I bought a scale, more for myself, and haven’t caught another 10#er… Must be bad luck. On the topic of the scales and injuring the fish, I bought a bag to place the fish in to prevent any injuries from happening.

What always amazes me……and I think it is an actual scientific fact…. all of the fish I catch shrink when I pull them out of the water! That 5 pound bass becomes a 2 pounder when it hits the air. That 10 pound northern barely makes five after shrinking. I think some fishermen, none that we know personally, see the fish just before it comes out of the water, and remember that weight. I honestly think it’s a timing thing. My brother-in-law is just the opposite. He usually underestimates by a couple of inches and maybe a couple of pounds. If he says it was a ten pounder, you can add 1 or 2 comfortably. I guess it takes all kinds!

My wife always tells me size doesn’t matter.

My wife thinks this is 12 inches

“I just hook my net hoop with the scale to get a quick weight. Then subtract the weight of an empty net. Actually quicker and easier than getting a length.”

Best way IMO. Have read more than a few articles that supporting a fish by mouth scales tears the inner-workings of the jaw and you get a lot of delayed mortality.

If its big enough to weigh, its probably worth releasing the fish successfully..

I have my digital scale and a tape along with my thermometer on an 8 foot dropper. I carry and use these for my personal benefit. I enjoy seeing other people’s pictures but seldom take any of my own.

Its amazing how many fishermen catch a 50 pound flathead that sure looks like 25 or 30 pounds.

I know, they don’t have a scale that large…but they have lifted feed bags before. )

I think it’s kinda cool myself.
