Anyone else been watching the river level forecasts and getting excited for the up coming walleye bite? Pool 2 is going to level off in action stage this weekend. That typically means some very good walleye action. Pitching 1/4 ounce hair jigs and casting cranks baits. I hadnt planned on being back down to pool 2 til this fall but with these conditions might just have to check it out this weekend. Good luck to those that are getting out.

It was a mess earlier this week. I may split my day in two today, come back early from the lakes this afternoon (Bald Eagle & White Bear) and then hit pool 2 tonight since it’s so close to home. Depends on how the bite is I guess.
I’ll let you know if the debris is starting to clear out at all. I was picking up leaves and twigs on nearly every cast in all directions earlier this week.
May 24, 2017 at 8:53 am #1695750I can’t buy them on anything but bullheads the last few times out down there Mike
May 24, 2017 at 9:14 am #1695752ive heard only the small ones hit bullheads.
water rising can be a challanging bite but once it levels off and those fish set up it can be very good. if you are fishing the upper part of 2 you cant fish to close to shore. tricky part can be holding the boat in current so you can fish the shoreline seams. have had some fantastic bites up that way when they are just about ready to close the ramp down at hidden falls.
May 24, 2017 at 10:39 am #1695789There are fish to be had right now.. I caught a couple nice ones on Sunday. Crank baits and Lipless baits have been good. I tried the northland ripping shad and it actually works pretty good. Don’t know if it is a go to bait but another to have in the box for me!
May 25, 2017 at 8:03 am #1695935Good to hear Joe. Now Im really looking forward to getting back down there.
So what are the ramps looking like? I see the river is heading into Action stage today. Any ramps getting shut down yet?
May 25, 2017 at 10:54 am #1695977Nothing closed yet that I know of. I will be launching at lions this afternoon.. Usual deal. I usually launch the boat and tie up to the bridge to the island so I don’t have to get my feet wet
I am out of town this weekend so might not be back down there till next week.. The fish should set up pretty good by next week. They were still moving around quite a bit I think. But real close to where I thought they should be.

I’ll swing by Hidden Falls on my way home from work to check out the ramp and water levels.
Sounds like Fort Snelling state park have pulled the dock from the MN river ramp and the whole island might be flooded. I’ve launched there plenty of times when the docks were out but it’s a no-go if the roads flood.
Might just pay to use watergate this weekend.
May 27, 2017 at 8:41 am #1696256Launched out of Hidden Falls yesterday. No problem. River was high and brown, but not much debris. Caught a few trolling cranks in 8 – 10n fow.
May 29, 2017 at 5:36 am #1696455Fished out of Lions levee yesterday. Water is high but launch is still in good shape. Need boots to get to the dock. River is looking good to. Not to much floating down but still need to keep an eye out for logs and crap. Our bite wasnt as good as I thought it would be. Still found fish just about every place we tried but it was just a couple here, couple there. Size was not great either. We through just about everything at them and caught fish on just about everything to. Hair jigs, cranks, crawlers, minnows.
Might have to go give it a try again today.
pool2foolInactiveSt. Paul, MNPosts: 1709May 29, 2017 at 11:37 am #1696491I launched at hidden falls last night but like an idiot relied on the weather report that I’d looked at earlier in the day. After about 20 minutes the storm blew in. It was wild, rainbows and blue sky over mendota area, other side of the river orange clouds and lightning. Got pounded by rain running back to the ramp. The storm passed quickly but I didn’t have any rain gear so I was soaked and didn’t feel like sitting out there in wet clothes so I headed in.
I’ll confess that I ran the watergate no wake zone wide open. Not messing around with lightning.
May 30, 2017 at 11:25 am #1696659I was down on Thursday and did pretty good in one area. Really good to be honest. Went back out yesterday and only found a couple small fish at that spot. The water was up a couple inches and much faster than Thursday night. We seen the same bite yesterday that you seen Mike. A couple in each spot but size was down. Had a 24 and 26 and the balance of the eyes were under 20 inches. pitching plastics did best for us yesterday.

Well as quick as this one came up she is draining out just as fast!!! SOB!!!
The bite has been great too. Water hit 70 degrees this last weekend on P2 and was 75 degrees on the Croix last night. Flow is slowing fast and the damn sheephead are on a tear. We caught 5 sheeps to each walleye last night.. And caught a lot of walleyes. Sorry to vent. I was not ready for the high flow to go so quick.
