Last winter around the time of the Sportsmen Show there was a post of a receipt of a few G Loomis rods. This spawned a discussion as to wheather it’s worth spending that kind of money etc… Some of the guys that bought some said they would give some reviews.
I bought a St. Croix Legend Tournament 7′ light fast action. It sells for $240 and I got it for $190 at the show plus a hat and a long sleeve shirt made with that moisture wicking fabric, $40 value! Anyway, I know $240 might not be super high end but…
I also got a Shimano C14 Stradic to put on it. The whole rig weighs in at 10.4 ounces without line.
I use it for rigging and casting light jigs and recently fishing wacky worms. I absolutely love this setup! I know it’s put more fish in the boat while lindy rigging. I plan on getting another one at next years show, one more suited for larger cranks.
As for the reel which I think retails around $240, it’s a great reel and extremely light however I’m not sure I’m getting enough benefit from it to warrant the cost. I’m pretty happy with my Shimanos and Pfluegers in the $70 range. Like I said though it’s so lightweight. I spooled it with Suffix 832 to offset the light action of the rod.

So to recap-The rod in my opinion was worth every penny and I’ll be adding another one for sure. I like the minimal grip of the Legend Tournament as well.

For those of you that also bought some of the upper rods last winter how are working for you? Good investment?

My elitetech 6’9″ MLF is still my goto. That’s with two Legend Tourneys in the boat. However its a hard comparison as all 3 rods serve different purposes. The 6’6″ MLXF Legend is nice and sensitive, and usually sits ready for action. The 6’3″ MXF Legend is sensitive also, but hasn’t seen much use at all. That elitetech just suits my style perfectly.

I made the dive this year also. Went over to TUCR and ordered a custom 6’10” medium extra fast rod with recoil guides, minimal alps grip, regular hook keeper, and drop shot keeper (great for long rig snells) way back at the but of the rod. I also went with a shimano stradic ci4+ for weight reasons. I believe my combo it right around 11oz with line on it. I have only had this rod since mid season so not a ton of use yet but so far it has been great and extremely sensitive. I have used it for pulling rigs, throwing rippin raps, and jigs.

I was able to use a 6’10” loomis NRX after I ordered, but before I received my rod and would say that they seemed very similar to me. The TUCR rod was not cheap bit when I look at the retail msrp price of the NRX I still saved a lot.

So for me I liked the idea of getting a deal on a great rod from a few great local guys.
