You’re going after Halibut, Rockfish, and Lingcod with a flyrod?

Graphite works well and holds up well as long as you don’t abuse it. It doesn’t like a lot of pressure concentrated in a small spot, so don’t bounce it off a gunnel, drop it on the rocks, or scratch it. The other thing to watch is making sure each section is firmly seated at the ferrules.

I’ve been using mainly Graphite for many years and the only breaks I’ve experienced happened when I did something stupid like step on a rod tip.

My first rod would be fine right now, If my friend didn’t sit on it.

Most of my flyrods are older Loomis rods in IM6 and IMX. WAY back when I made the jump into quality graphite, I immediately noticed the improvement/ease of casting WF and tapered lines. Like Root mentioned, don’t bang them up.

Based on the few species you listed, I suspect you may be using some heavy duty shooting heads or super heavy segments of leadcore. If so, composite rods may be a better option. I have an old 9wt ugly stick that blows for casting pike/musky baits. However, it works awesome with the load I use of a shooting head for open water in Lake MI
