I have a mixture of Otter and Eskimo ice anchors they look the same to me. I have the tool for putting them in with a drill for some reason this year only a few work good the tips look Ok to me. I noticed there is a cut down the threads on some of them if I was to regrind this down to the tip would it help? Or was thinking of just getting some decking bolts with the torx heads? Thanks

I used to always bring a drill with, and drill a pilot hole, then spin them in by hand.

I haven’t used an ice anchor in over 5 years.
Brought a house to LOTW to Poop in this weekend and figured, i’ll bring one less thing and leave the drill at home…
Well, i couldn’t spin one of them in the ice by hand so poop in the house it was…
I suppose that’s why i bought the drill some 10 years ago(and since forgot).

These were the good eskimo anchors too. They wear out i suppose. I do recall the colder the ice, harder to start.

Anyway, that always worked good for me. $29 drill from walmart and 3/8″ bit (I think). Drill still works, i use it to drill out powder-coated jig eyelets.

Yep, bring a drill and bit, make a pilot hole and in she goes.

A small drill and one of these make a huge difference and go right in

Yep I do have the ice anchor tool but it just does not go in good. Pilot hole sounds like a good idea

The tips dull or break easily on those. Either resharpen to a point or toss em.

Ideally they would make them with a cutting point like a drill bit or a self tapping screw.

All ice anchors are not equal. Some have a long thin taper, start easy but can bend. Others have more body in the thread and a shorter taper, hold up well but don’t always start well and can chip out the ice.

They were only 20.00 back then and stainless steel, twisted in with little effort, I bought them at an Ice Show….
