Help with getting a new bed

    I need a new bed.

I know there are already a bunch of threads on this but I’ll be dipped if I can find ’em.

I searched for Sleep Number and didn’t find them but I know that was mentioned in several of the threads.
    Am I doing something wrong?

Anybody have the links to previous threads?

My husband and I have a Sleep Number bed with the adjustable base that lifts the head and/or feet. Personally, I could sleep on concrete and be fine with it. BUT my husband is a larger fella with back/knee/foot issues and so we figured we’d give the Sleep Number system a try. I think it’s safe to say he likes it! He seems to complain a lot less about aches and pains since we got this set up, which is a good sign.

We waited until Black Friday and got a major great deal from the Sleep Number Store. I had no idea mattress stores participated in Black Friday! He enjoys being able to adjust the firmness as needed and I enjoy the dual chambers. Meaning, I can sleep on my firm setting of 95 every night, and he can adjust to what he needs depending on how he’s feeling that night. It has been worth the very costly price tag.

I think when shopping around for a new bed, the first question you have to ask yourself is how much does she weigh? [ Insert joke here ].

Then ask yourself if you want a spring bed or one you can use all year round.

    This^^^^.

But here’s the deal with Tempurpedic that the sales guy told us and if we wouldn’t have listened to this, we wouldn’t have bought it.

The thing with Tempurpedic is you HAVE to lay on it for 15-20 minutes! You can’t just lay down for 20 seconds and get the feel for it because your initial reaction will NOT be what the experience of sleeping on a Tempurpedic is like. Only after that memory foam adjusts to your body and matches your temperature will you really “get” the awesomeness of a Tempurpedic.

If I had gone with my initial reaction after laying down for 30 seconds, I’d just have moved on to an inferior bed. My first thought was these things are hard and don’t mold to my body, it’s like laying on the floor. I totally didn’t get it and we both initially thought no way are we getting this thing..

Fast forward 15 minutes of laying on the thing and we were both sold and no way were we buying anything else.

I don’t know what is best. We get a new Sealy pillow top every 5-6 years, no complaints. (Get them on clearance or scratch and dent sales at Slumberland.)

I can tell we bought an Original Mattress Factory mattress once. It was one of their top of the line models. Worst mattress ever!

We have been in the market for a new bed as well. Keep stalling BC its a big purchase and I was waffling on the price tag of a tempurpedic. But everyone I’ve heard from loves em.

I just like the idea of no spring noise. Yeah, its an issue for everyone with kids. blush

Is the TempurPedic the memory foam type stuff? We had a quality memory foam mattress for a while and we noticed two problems with it. One, after a couple hours of sleeping, the foam warms and conforms to your body resulting in a softer mattress when you wake up in the morning. The firmness was perfect when we just got in, but it didn’t stay that way through the night. And two, it’s WARM! I felt so hot sleeping on memory foam. Coupled with the fact that my husband is a damn furnace when he sleeps, it was just too warm.

Same here on the warm thing, still is a concern for us. Might have to rethink, again, ugh.

I have no issue with the mattress getting hot ? I tend to be warmer always and the wife can be freezing on the mattress and I am perfect so…. grin Like Grouse said, when I first laid on one in the store… no way. Back then they had a 30 night trial… no way was I giving it back. I don’t have the best back or knees (dam sports) but I sleep like a baby on our Tempur… went to a 5 star resort last february in Mexico and I swore I was sleeping on a big bag of potatoes… doah crazy cry

Wow your mattresses last that long? Quiet at your houses, eh? grin

But seriously folks, good info. We are needing a new mattress too. I’m a heater, and she’s a freeze baby. We both like firm mattresses.

Not a big fan of our sleep number. Big hole in the center of it. Wife hates it. Unless I get the number just right I’m sore as he’ll in the morning. Usually takes a few nights to get adjusted right. Not sure what would be better. At least I can adjust this pos. Other mattresses we might just have to buy a few to see what works.

Agree with memory foam being to warm. Even the half inch of foam on our bed will have you sweating through the night.

Don’t let the salesman sell you anything with memory foam if you’re hot blooded.

To those who said foam is to hot, was it actual Tempurpedic brand or cheapo versions? wave

Wow, this is great. Thanks for all the replies but…
Now I’m really confused as far as what to get.

We have a Tempur-Pedic bed now, bout 7 years old. It was like $2500 when we bought it. We never did really like it and should have returned it but the return policy at that time sucked.
It’s too firm and too hot. My wife won’t sleep it and hasn’t for about 6 months now. It might ok in the winter but I notice it’s even harder until it warms up and then it’s too hot…summer is just plain too hot.
I’m going to try and sell it. Any takers?

I was thinking about going back to a spring mattress or Sleep Number.
But…after reading the above…I don’t know what to do now.
I have tried the ones with an Adjustable Base and like that. It also had a message setting…that was nice too. But it was a Serta and made with “Cool Gel” and had about 7 layers of stuff like that. It was about $3500 with the Adj. Base.
Yikes…I know that seems to be about the going rate for high end beds but dam, that’s a lot. The return policy’s seem to be better now anyhow.

Guess I keep shopping and “test driving” a few…

Also not a fan of Sleep Number. Bought one two years ago in the mid price range model with memory foam pad. This was before they started including the cooling gel in the foam. While I like it cool at night I didn’t notice any excess heating. The one thing that bothered me the most was how slow memory foam responds to new contours like when you roll over. If one lies still all night not a problem In short- Two years in I’m still trying to adjust my body to the bed and find my sleep number. Good luck with your search.

I don’t recall if we had an actual TempurPedic or if it was another memory foam brand. But if I had to guess, I don’t think it was TempurPedic.

I can’t help you pick because it sounds like we are different. I require a firm bed. So hard that when I pump up a Sleep Number to the correct firmness it feels convex, like I’m laying on the outside of a balloon.
A couple inches of memory foam on the floor would be better for me. I have a bad back and have hardware implanted that keeps my back straight. I wouldn’t be able to walk after a couple nights on a soft bed.

My suggestion is to pay attention to the recommendations from people that use a similar firmness that you are looking for and throw out the rest of the recommendations, including mine. grin

    Yes, exactly.

I don’t have any issue with the Tempurpedic being too warm. Also, the mattress pad, bedding, and room temp are all going to play into this, so you may have to adjust all factors, not just the bed.

I’ve always needed the room to be like a meat locker at night to be able to sleep.

Bottom line, though, is the only way to really get the right mattress is to be willing to return one if you buy it and it’s not working out. I’m sure like anything else, the Tempur isn’t right for everyone.

we have the Tempurpedic brand, we have had it for 5 yrs, winter is great, summer I will wake up a sweaty mess. They make an “AC” for them and a cool pad but we are thinking a different bed??

We also had a sleep number, they are great if you sleep on your side of the bed, if you like to snuggle or if you get out of bed it seems to affect the other air bladder, We gave that one away to my parents.

Agree with the statements that you need to spend 20-30 minutes on a bed to get an idea if it’s comfortable, that goes with any type of mattress. Best suggestions are to block out a whole day and bring a book or two to read while mattress shopping to make sure you get something you like.

Here’s a great resource for knowing how to buy, I’d suggest looking through this whole website before you get too serious about purchasing.

    http://www.mattressnerd.com/mattress-buying-guide/

FWIW, I don’t care for Sleep number beds for the reasons mentioned (hole in the middle, only comfortable if you stay in your area) and while I’ve liked the foam mattresses I’ve slept on while traveling, I’m not sure if it’s right for us. Our most current bed is an Original Mattress Factory model, second best in their line, 4 years old, and unlike Jon, we like it still. It’s a heavy SOB which makes flipping it a giant pain but we’ll see how it holds up over the next 4-5 years.

One other option for you is there are a lot of new direct order foam beds that give a 75-100 night in home trial and they often get good reviews. It’s something I’ll look into for my next purchase for sure.

Zooks – That was a lot of good info to read. Thanks!

And to everybody else, Thanks Too !
So at this point, I guess I grab a book and plan to spend time lounging on beds in the stores. I feel like an idiot laying there for 1/2 an hour but if that’s what it takes, so be it.
Better do that now before fall fishing/hunting kicks in!

lubie40 – We have a “pad” that we bought with the Tempur-Pedic mattress that was supposed to help with the heat issue. I wouldn’t call it “AC” and for us, the bed is just plain too hot, even with that…and again for us, too firm. It does have some good points like when the dog jumps off, we don’t go flying!

I agree with a few of the posts here that said, be prepared to try one for 30 days and if it doesn’t work, return it and try again.
What a PIA but sounds likes the best plan.

I also noticed the box spring or adjustable platforms.
I like the adjustable ones and some had a message function too.

Anybody have the adjustable platform? Do you use it?
Seems like it would be nice to have. The Chiropractor is always telling me to put something under my knees to take the pressure off my low back. It looks like getting the adjustable platform would do the same thing.
And raising the head part would slow down the snoring…not mine either by the way.
Yep, they run about $1k extra…good grief.

We picked up a Simmons Beautyrest Recharge over the holidays, because the price was right. It may just be a stop gap measure for now until we are ready to upgrade.

The funny thing is you realize how bad the old one was when you look at the made bed and it looks weird because it is so perfectly flat. P

We’ll see how it goes. I prefer firm, but Michelle is a side sleeper and they recommended plush for that. She has the back issues and is a light sleeper, so she wins this one. I could probably sleep on a sack of rocks in a hurricane.
