Hi all. I just bought an atv. I have an older Frabill 2 person flip over ice hut. It is very roomy and has served me well. With this atv my ice fishing world has expanded, especially getting to backwaters of the Mississippi and ponds far from a road. I have heard that simply towing a sked/shack behind an atv by attaching the rope to the rear or atv doesnt work well and isnt just that simple. So how do I do this? On the cheap if possible. Any information or direction is appreciated.

Get a hitch, make a hitch or feed the tow rope through a length of pvc to keep it from catching up to your tires.

I use the rope thru pvc method….don’t have pics immediately available, but that actually works pretty well.

Thanks! Pics would be good though. So just feed rope loop through one length of pvc or pvc on each leg of rope?

The hitch can be had for about $0-$60 bucks and make it easy, you dont really have to think much.

Get a cover too, or the sled will be full of snow

    Use two legs of PVC.

You can also just use 1 length of pvc. Make the pvc long enough so just enough rope sticks out to slip over your ball hitch on the atv.

Not as delux as a rigid hitch but it will keep your shack from over running you.

Sportsman’s Guide has a universal hitch for ice houses and it works well for the price. Shappell makes it. Wouldn’t be hard to re-create at home if you had the tools and materials.

Great advice on the hitch or rope through PVC pipe. If you just tried with a rope you would end up doing damage to the sled. Slack in the rope, it will slam into the back of your atv, when you take off it would put tons of stress on the sled too. Ideally a hitch is best with the built in spring in the mounting location because it takes a ton of the shock out of the jarring hits as you go across the ice. A buddy made his own hitch for his Otter Resort and that thing has broken more times than I can count. He doesn’t have a spring in there. Granted, his Resort is a heavy beast and it gets towed at pretty high speeds across rough terrain so his hitch might work for some people.
