Help helix 7

  • #2032189

Hello everyone just bought my first fish finder and Jon boat. People have made me nervous about setting up my new helix 7 mega si saying I can fry it buy connecting it directly to the battery? Just wanna make sure I won’t, expensive unit for myself and don’t want to break it. I am purchasing a marine grade fuse holder with a 3amp fuse from my local boat shop, also gonna be soldering the ends together and adding heat shrinking tubes. Also is it ok if I connect the fuse holder wire to the terminal then to the battery or should I add more wire in-between them? I’ll post a picture of the battery any help and advice would be great!

Others will know more but yes if you directly hook it straight to the battery you could fry it. You said your using a fuse that is the key to the equation. As long as you have the fuse you should be good to go.

I like to keep fuses as close to the battery as possible. Less unprotected wire to short that way. 3 amp might be cutting it close since the unit could draw about 1 amp at full screen brightness. Not sure if there is much of a startup surge or not.

Does the helix not come with an inline fuse? Just use what is recommended in the manual and you should be just fine.

You won’t fry your Helix 7 by hooking it directly to a battery and powering your Helix 7 directly to your battery is the actually the best way to ensure clean power to your display. A 3 amp fuse is recommended for a Helix 7 so you are good. Like others say, place the fuse next to the battery, ensure your positive and negative wires are hooked to the battery correctly and you’ll have no problems.

You’ll enjoy your Helix 7. I’ve had one for years and it’s a great display.

You’re doing it right; I believe they usually say to connect the fuse to the positive wire. Thing I hate about those helix power cords is they are so thin!
