Can anyone get me a ballpark date range when Yamaha started using this cowling? 70hp, currently mounted on a 98 Boston Whaler but to me the motor looks newer. It’s a long story but I’m trying to help a friend and this photo is all I have to go on.

    Thanks!

    The 70hp 4stroke came out in 2009/2010 I believe

Joe— thanks that’s a great start. Is that cowling shape still in use or would there be an end date when they switched to something else?

Iowa— unfortunately don’t have access to the serial at the moment. Like I said it’s a long story and that photo is all I have.

Youbetcha— I definitely realized that after I saw the posted title. I’m in a pretty happy longterm relationship with a Yamaha of my own so I’ve got those bases covered for now.

Have your friend look at the side of the lower cowling or on the side of the engine itself, most often there is an emmisions rating sticker there and it will have the year there also.

What Iowa boy said. Doubt that motor is 14 years old.

The graphics on that motor (straight grey to blue line) under “four stroke” point to a 2012MY or newer. A serial number lookup even when possible will confirm.

My friend is selling the boat for their dad from long distance and dad is not able/willing to help with details like this. It’s a whole freaking mess and I am just trying to help them put an ad together. Friend has power of attorney and guardianship but dad and boat are on the west coast.

Well, if you’re going to date a Yamaha, the decision is clear. Go with the 4-stroke!! yay

    Here’s a 2020 cowling. That’s the only pic I could find. I don’t own the boat anymore.

Ha I had the same thought jester

Depends on how serious you’re dating…

I’d start out with a crystal wine glass and a bottle of vintage Ring-Free.

After she’s had a drink or two, whisper the maintenance schedule into her ear filter…drip hot wax from a Carnauba candle onto her…then give a sensual massage with a clean microfiber.

If everything goes right, you’ll get to take her cowling off and check the oil woot

Miraculously my friend found a video of the motor and I was able to zoom in enough to see the plate. It’s an F70LA. I think that means we’re looking at 2012 but would be nice to confirm.

I’ve tried to sleuth out the serial and PID from the video but it’s tough. Attaching a screen shot.

I see 6CJ L 1184065 but I’m not getting any hits on that when I try to lookup on the Yamaha maintenance and warranty site. I tried a bunch of variations and am coming up empty.
