Looking for an experienced flathead angler that would be willing to go with me a few times and show me the ropes. I have been out a few times trying what I have read with little success. Getting frustrated. So far I have been fishing the Red Wing area.

    That’s flathead fishing. Patience.
It has the catch rate of muskies without the casting to keep you occupied.

BK knows a few things about flatheads and i hear is willing to share them in a boat for a nominal fee.

All i can say is run big baits and spend more and more time doing it!

welcome to the DARKSIDE of late/sleepness night with not much to show for it, but remember all it takes is one big ole flat.

id say bug BK as well happens to knwo a thing or 2 and can help out. he might even wrk for SPAM

being that ur in RW area, u get 2 rods. have one with livebait on and one with cut. as of right now it seems tobe a 50/50 split between them

for live bait its ahrd to beat a 7-10″ bullie, but big suckers or cheek chubbs will do good as well, just make sure it lively.

my cut bait is usually fresh chunks of sucker or sheephead. like andy said big baits. my usually chunk of cut is 2″x4″ on an 8/0 circle or khale hook
sumtimes ill run hand size baits. a big flat can shallow a boot if needed.

I’m also a fan of clipping fins on my bullies. It does 3 things, prevents the flat from getting pricked by the bullhead and letting go. Puts scent in the water. Causes the bullhead to swim more erratically. Flat head fishing is about time spent on the water once you catch a decent one you will be hooked for life though. As far as where to fish you know as well as we do its cuts, holes, snags, and rocks. Just have to find a combination of these things with hungry flats in them. Don’t get discouraged it is after all the fish of kings.

You can’t beat a good chunk fresh cut bait or a lively wriggling bullhead or other bait fish. Just remember that Flatheads are apex predators. Yes they eat cut bait, the two I got in a week last year were both on cut bait, but a live bullhead or any other bait fish will likely out perform the cut bait unless it’s that “magic time of year” when there is a cut bait Flathead bite bonanza. I’ll be working a lot this summer but will try to make it down to the St.Croix as much as I can during weekends and days off. Oh and always watch what’s being caught by anglers in their reports and when you’re fishing, the most common fish is likely the predominant prey for Flatheads at that time for the area. It can be sheepshead, mooneye, sunfish, redhorse, bullheads, etc.
