Help! 20 guage slug shoots too high

Problem: Old Mossberg 500 with new rifled barrel and open sights shoots about 18 inches high at 50 yards with the sight adjusted as far as it will go. These are with slugs that are around 1700-1800 fps. With Federal Power Shoks (1450 fps) I can get em about 8 inches high at 50 yds. Anyone know of a quick load or fix for this? I can settle for the Power Shocks if I need to. All the groups are acceptable without the high impact problem.
    Thanks.

dumb question, which way are you adjusting the rear site when you say its as far it will go?? I am assuming down?? that is the right way to drop the bullet, raising it will raise the bullets impact point.

I had a mossberg once that did the same thing and I had to whittle a new front site out of a tooth brush handle that was a quarter inch taller than the stock one, never had a problem with it coming loose or moving on me.
ended up with the rear site in about the middle position.

Yup, It’s down a low as it will go. I did find some Winchester sabots at 1400 fps. I’ll give em a try.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but if you are shooting high, you move the rear sight up to lower the front sight.

Move rear sight the direction you want the bullet to go, aka down.

I don’t know what kind of sights you have, but can you file the front site? 1/16 of an inch should get you in the money, but I’d try 1/32 first.

    Have you considered contacting Mossberg?

I’d think they’d have some suggestions.

Before you do anything else, make absolutely sure your barrel is seated correctly in the receiver and that the magazine cap / barrel retainer is tight. I don’t specifically know about the Mossberg 500, but if there are flat washers or spring washers used as part of the barrel retainer, be sure they are in the correct order and alignment. Many guns will fire with the washers in the wrong order and with bird shot it will matter little, but with slugs…

Look carefully at the gap and the fitment of the barrel to the receiver and make sure there are no gaps or other signs of poor machining or fit.

If you have to resort to filing the front site, go VERY slowly. A little can go a wrong way, this is an operation I would only attempt at a range where I could file, test, file, test, etc.

Well, with Winchester sabots (1400fps) I can get about 6 inches high at 50 yds holding almost dead on.

So your saying filing the front sight down a hair will lower the groups? I hadn’t thought about that.

mossberg 500 – nuff said. I’ve been on turkey hunts with guys with that gun and they wanted to wrap it around a tree

do not file the front site down, that is doing the same thing as raising the rear site.
you will shoot higher yet if you do that,I promise you.

You can maybe get a new taller front sight from Brownells. I had to do that on a muzzle loader. I would call Mossberg as well.

I agree with Iowaboy…do not file the front sight. If you are able to get a taller front sight, that would be your solution.

Can you shim the front sight up or file the rear sight notch lower?

My apologies, you are right. I was typing about front sights and still thinking about rear sights. Don’t file front site, that will make shot go higher. Sorry I had a case of lesdyxia

Here is Mossberg’s canned email response:
Thank you for your e-mail and sorry for the delay. We recommend shipping that part to us for an examination. This service is only for US based customers. If there is a fee involved, we will call you directly prior to performing the service.
    • Package your item securely in a suitable shipping container; be certain parts cannot shift during shipment.
    • Include in the container a clear description of the problem or service you wish us to perform, your complete return shipping address (no P.O. Boxes) your daytime telephone number and the serial number to your firearm.
    • Ship via your chosen carrier, prepaid (we do not accept C.O.D. shipments) and insured to….

After I got this email I called Mossberg and explained this is a brand new barrel. The friendly lady emailed me a return label and said the barrel would likely be replaced. If so, I’ll be satisfied.
