I wave at everyone…tuna boats, canoes, other fishing boats, etc.

It pains me to wave at jet skier’s but I still usually do….never got a wave outta Griz, though.

It’s a universal thing. I always ask myself why after I wave. We don’t wave at all cars or people we pass on the street. I guess boating is a special club.

Agree, it’s nice to get out of town on a regular basis to be reminded of this. Seems everyone is waiving as they drive by my place at Mille Lacs.

There is an old guy just on the outskirts of Hinkley that sits in his garage on the weekends waving at every car that goes by.

Always wave back up north. If you don’t, it’s a sure sign you are a “Citidiot”. whistling

    I almost always wave….why wouldn’t you?

    100% agreed.

    What does waving accomplish?
Are people that starved for emotional attachment that even a slight hand of motion from an appendage is gratifying for you?

Don’t get me wrong I enjoy talking to folks at the launch, from shore, etc but when I’m on the water that is my leave me alone time.

Waving is just a friendly way of acknowledging we could be at work or mowing the lawn or any other of the long list of less fun things, but we’re not! We are on the water loving life, while most other mopes are not. toast toast

Also, if we pass each other in vehicles on a dirt road, you get a wave or peace sign salute off the top of the steering wheel for the same reasons.

C’mon, you don’t even give out the one lifted finger or the too-stiffass-to-wave nod of the head?

Next you’ll be saying you’ve actually driven a pontoon boat without the obligatory Captain’s Hat with scrambled eggs on the bill.

Is this the guy just west of town!? I wave at him almost daily. But, a “Citidiot” wouldn’t see him during the week moon Haven’t seen him out much with this cold weather though.

Back to the OP. I wave if waved at. I don’t care really either way. I don’t go out of my way in the boat to wave at everyone.

Yes, just west of town headed towards 65 on highway 3.

Hey IceNEyes1986, question for you on that road from Hinkley to 65. What is the speed limit? There is not one speed limit sign on that stretch of road!

I have no clue! lol. Even leaving town it only says “end of 30mph zone”. I would guess 55. My cruise is usually set to 65. I have passed quite a few “Tribal Police” & never even had them look back. I’ve also been going eastbound & down at 65mph and had the Tribal guys come barreling up from behind. Wait for the cherries to turn on but they never do. Not sure where their jurisdiction is either though.

I wave to anglers because I tend to get along with a great majority of them.

Best article ever. I’d quote some but there’s too much good stuff there. Had a wisdom tooth pulled earlier today and the literal laugh out loud is so worth the pain.

I totally agree. Complaining about boat captains waiving at each other … only on IDO!

I think this article from the Onion makes it clear.

    This is great…

I am more of a wave back guy and not always the wave first guy. I guess mostly because I am not usually the one going towards a boat to wave…sometimes if we make direct eye contact then I feel I need to wave or it can get kind of weird and awkward. Kids they always get a wave just because they are kids and seem happy when they get to wave at someone. I generally wave goodbye to to a boat that leaves the spot I’m on. Makes them think. “I wonder if that guy knows something we don’t” I once waved a guy over to my boat so we were almost touching sides to politely tell him he was fishing too close and if he just wanted to just jump in my boat and fish with me he could. It would make fishing this spot easier.

So why is the wave back almost 100% in the fridgid cold? Did a miss a good theory on that? Pretty sure people in rural areas have better manners, course people in the south also have better manners-does not make one group better, the culture is just different.

I’m from South Dakota. Anytime you pass someone, especially on a gravel road, you give a couple finger wave off the steering wheel. In the boat, same deal. One exception. One time a buddy and I were fishing on the Mississippi by Brainerd. Waved at a guy. He didn’t wave back. Thought he was kind of rude. Then we realized he didn’t have arms. We felt terrible.

But have you ever had someone not wave back? That is the ultimate rejection.

    Small town upbringing here…

I enjoyed the folks who would wave every single time you met even if it was dozens of times a day. As I grew older I began to question their well being. Low self esteem? whacked in the noggin? Psych? only to learn that little act of waving provided them a few moments of connectedness with other people. This pandemic has surely taught us all the importance of human connectivity.

I attempt to respond to all waves. Just sometimes I’m distracted by no less than a million possible interruptions.

Great food all over as well. Just no uber or much delivery.
The ma and pa Cafe right down the road from here serves the best home cooked dinners and breakfast a guy can get for 6 or 7 bucks you go home stuffed
