I switched from Lowrance to Humminbird as well. It was a great move. Either of these units in the latest generation will run the new Mega 360 imaging (available next month), which I would highly recommend if you run a Minn Kota trolling motor and you’re a caster. The 360 technology directly accounts for most of my fish catches each year, regardless of species. It’s that good. If you’re a troller, the benefits might not be so dramatic.
Couple of things you won’t readily see when comparing the two units is that the Solix allows customizable screen displays. This feature is really valuable and the biggest thing I missed when going to the Helix, which doesn’t allow the user to customize their views. Lots of screen options with the Helix though, just not the exact configurations you might want.
One downside to the Solix vs. the Helix – and this may have been fixed with the latest generation, not sure – is the plug-in. The Helix units have a nice single snap on plug-in for all the cables while the Solix does not. Major hassle removing the Solix vs the Helix.
If you decide to go with Humminbird, get the biggest unit you can afford. Size definitely matters when it comes to sonar/gps units. You’ll just see far more with the bigger screen, particularly if you’re running multiple views at the same time. The best fishermen in the world right now are running large screen units completely dedicated to SI or 360, simply because everything – including fish – show up so much more prominently. Second units are used for mapping and 2d/DI.
You can’t go wrong with either unit IMO, but there are some differences when you look more deeply into each.
