Looking for advice on what other people do with their electronics when trailering. I recently upgraded from 2 smaller lowrance units from 2001 that we left on the bow and console. I just installed a helix 7 G2N chirp gps/sonar at the bow and a helix 10 G2N mega chirp SI at the console. I’ve been out once so far and all I can say is WOW!!!! Anyways, my question is do people leave there helix units attached while transporting or do you have a storage solution to keep them safe and reattach them at the boat access? I’m contemplating buying a pelican box with a foam insert and motify it to fit my two helix units.

Never trailer with it on-too easy to steal-rock could hit it.

I always trailer with mine on. If you’re on gravel, I’d consider taking it off each time. If you only travel paved roads – get a sturdy mount and check it regularly, use a good protective cover, and don’t worry about it on the highway. If someone manages to steal it while you’re doing 60mph down the road…you’ve got bigger things to worry about.

Now if you stop along the way and leave the boat unattended (which is crazy to do considering what gear costs) then I’d definitely take it off.

I have the snap-on cover on the boat and leave the electronics in place. But if there’s a restaurant stop or overnight stop, I take them off and lock them in a rod locker. My bow mount trolling motor is padlocked to the base plate and hasn’t been off in years. With the advent of battery-powered cutoff tools, my padlock could be cut off in seconds, but the odds are it’s still safe.

I trailer with mine n place. Never leave my sight and I don’t have an expensive one either. I only remove it for winter storage. Bring it into the house when I send the boat to heated winter storage.

Nothing wrong with leaving it on while traveling if you have a sturdy mount and sturdy dash.

I don’t (I have a heavy 10″ unit and had to mount it in a weird location due to size) and even getting a little worried running it on choppy waters.

If you don’t feel comfortable trailering with it, you can buy a cheap foam pistol case like I did. It was a fraction of the cost and you just have to cut out the foam yourself.

I’ve always left them in place for shorter runs (20-30 miles) and either taken them out or tilted them down and rested against the carpet with the Ram mount on long runs.

use the Helix quick release mount, that’s why its there, don’t take a chance with something breaking internally by bouncing around why traveling. Get one of those padded Cabela’s electronic’s carry case ($25) and be done with it….

Mine never come off the boat. Big ram mounts don’t move. I have a 10″&12″ on my dash.

These are build to take a pounding and keep on going. That’s why they’re $x100 the cost of a TV.
