Helix on Helm Over Heating

I have a Helix 10 gen 1 on the helm of my Skeeter. On hot, windless, sunny days and I am fishing slow, the unit can get so hot that the display goes haywire. I shut it down. When on plane the unit cools off. I think the sun coming through the windshield is magnified onto the back of the black unit. Anyone have a solution? I did put a towel over the windshield and it worked but I’d like some other shading solution. Thanks.

Try cutting a piece of that reflective mat that you put in your car. It does a pretty good job keeping the dash protected.I would think you could cut to cover the back of the helix and some velcro and your ready to go.

I use a reflective mat when storing. Do you have a 12v power plug at the dash? Get one of the 12v clamp on fans. It cools you too. The mat directly on the unit is a bad idea as it will trap the units own heat. I fasten my mat to the glass like the car/truck reflectors.

You sure it’s the sun? My Helix 7 is getting hot (almost too hot to touch) and it was an overcast day. I’m checking voltages, and wiring. Came here to see if others have experienced this.

It seems to only overheat on hot, sunny days.

Have the same problem on my Helix 12 G2. Called Humminbird who told me to send it in. Fortunately, the unit is still under warranty. The problem has steadily gotten worse.

Eventually my display had to be replaced a few weeks ago. It was no longer under warranty. Let us know what HB thinks the problem is.

My buddy’s helix 9 was overheating one day last month, overcast morning, maybe 80 degrees out by 10 am. culprit was loose connection at the battery.
