I don’t know about that. They do not network or have I pilot link. I think this replaces lower end 5 or 600 series. They others will eventually be gone but replaced by Onix when that price comes down. That would be my guess. Helix 7 looks sweet though. Might have to get one for the bow.

700 bucks for a 7″ SI unit is a pretty good deal. I know lots of people who don’t require all the other stuff.

i’ll be in the market for a few months. i’ll either jump on one of these or a used 899ci.

It is a great deal. However, the 899 can be had for 850$ brand new. The ability to network, fast processor, link, etc. are well worth the extra 150$ in my opinion. I-pilot link is the biggest deal breaker for me. This has changed fishing for me and made it much more enjoyable. If you have not experienced link yet I recommend you find someone who has it and go out fishing with them. Boat control in all weather is a non-issue now and I don’t have to deploy the anchor at all. Moving from spot to spot is very easy compared to pulling anchor. It is expensive but worth it. Investing now in an 899 over helix 7 will at least give you the option to upgrade in the future if you want. The helix 7 will not give you that option. Anyway, either unit is great and whatever you decide will be fun to use…just my opinion…

The 899 also allows you to use two sd cards which may be a deal break for me if it were my primary unit. Also the micro sd has only been out for a while and deals are hard to come by. You can buy an older version of the lakemaster chips in regular sd format for like 60$ which would create half the difference in buying 899 over Helix 7.

With that said, it looks like a sweet unit and I may be looking at one for the bow in the future to pair with my 899. It will not network but thats ok with me as I do not want to add a 5-port hub in order to get 2 units and link on my network.

Do you think they will come out with a Helix 9 or Helix 11?

Just like Humminbird said the legacy series would never talk with the Onix series, then magically they released a software update that allowed it.

The Helix brand will replace the Legacy brand starting next year, Humminbird offered the crazy good rebates this summer to clear out legacy parts stock…

They will start to enable features on the Helix once they phase out the legacy stock… of course this is all my opinion, but the writing is on the wall…

Like all manufacturers, Humminbird has a 5 year plan in place and releases products only when the market dictates it, no need to show their hand with new technology if they don’t have to yet…

I’d guess you’ll start to see the Onix prices come down a little and the Helix 8,9,10 prices raised to fill the gap eventually left by the 99x & 119x units… The $500 legacy unit price drop a year ago just shows how much they were marking up their prices all those years…

Saw on another reliable site with a good douce that helix 9, 10, and 12 inch models will be out this winter. They will likely replace the core series. However they are no the “lesser models” like helix 5 and 7. As in they will have upgraded processor and will be networkable. So it will likely be at the same or higher price point compared to current core series. So those hoping for a larger screen at a more economical price they are kind of stuck with helix 5 or 7.

How come everywhere I go they have the Helix 5 but no one carries the helix 7? Not Joes, Gander, Cabellas.

The Helix 5 hits the sub-$500 price point. All the modern advances in sonar, side imaging, down imaging, and GPS for only $500? That’s a powerful selling point.

They are fairly new this summer. Not many places in the Midwest would buy much stock due to lower sales in fall and winter on these units. They buy a bunch in the spring and don’t order many more after they are out. There will be tons of them ready to go next spring. Now if you don’t live in the Midwest then I am not sure why they wouldn’t carry them year round.

You can easily find them online.

Yes it does. I believe it is the XI 9 20 ducer. I have done this with my 899 and it works great as a gps unit and back up flasher!
